I don't like this worrying about stockpiling extras -- have couple of elderly friends in my community who can't find paper products/hand sanitizers so at least I can share but I do need to replace. I don't keep as many backups as I use to - farmers always stock up but I broke that habit, unfortunately.

The grocery store this AM was short on many items - including some veggies to make my soup on my second trip. Packed with stressed shoppers. No hand sanitizer (again) and they told me it would be on shelves by 7:00 AM. The show rooms on strip are dark - nightclubs closed down - lots of people infected at MGM since they have more hotels/casinos on strip. Fearful of so cal's medieval diseases on streets with homeless population (and covid 19) and how many infected tourists have roamed around here.

22 more new cases in the last seven hours here in Ontario. My MRI has been cancelled at Princess Margaret in TO due to this virus. Everything is coming to a halt

@newsheep: Why is MRI cancelled? Is the hospital infected? I work for a hospital not too far from there and it is continuing to operate, we have infectious disease protocols.

To clarify our mass outbreak protocol here in the US: All of our hospitals have huge corridors (if you ever wonder about all the empty space in US hospitals, that's what they're for) and thousands of various types of beds and supplies in the basement with the necessary technology and plastic sheet barriers. In case of a mass outbreak, we simply pack out the supplies. Currently we are screening people at the entrance of the hospital parking and making people that show any symptoms (primarily fever) go to another entrance.

The primary problem will be 3 months down the road - if China makes true on its threat to block supplies to the US, our hospital systems will start to run out of supplies for current care levels and start to ration certain supplies. The US, since the end of the cold war, has given up on production independence, that's about to change.

It's all about medical capacity - resources are not unlimited.

This is why it's such a risk - it threatens to overwhelm hospitals which has a knock-on effect on other medical services.

No hand sanitizer (again) and they told me it would be on shelves by 7:00 AM

I feel for old people most - not only are they at greater risk, but they also have most difficulty waiting in long lines or joining a rugby-scrum to grab things.

This is why it's important that stores not allow greedy hoarding, so everyone has a chance to get supplied.

If you can, buy extra and distribute it to local elderly people. Many places need volunteers to get them groceries in normal times, they need extra consideration and help now.

Just in: France is reporting that half the people on ventilators are under 60, which is why they are shutting more things down.

    Dear myUHN User,

On March 10, 2020, the World Health Organization declared a global COVID-19 pandemic. This means that this novel coronavirus has spread across the world.

When people come together, the risk of infection with COVID-19 increases. For this reason, we are limiting who can come into UHN hospital buildings until further notice.

If you have an upcoming UHN appointment, please review this important information before coming to the hospital.

    Important information for patients

Please do not come to the hospital for a clinic appointment, test or other procedure if you have any of the following symptoms:

    • Fever
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath
    • Sore Throat
    • Runny Nose

Find a list of all our clinics, tests, and procedures »

If you have one or more these symptoms, call your clinic. Talk to the staff about:

    • Whether you need to come to the hospital
    • Rescheduling your appointment
    • Any concerns you have with delays in your care

What can I expect when I come to the hospital?

Starting March 16, 2020, we are screening all patients and visitors before they come into the hospital buildings. There may be line-ups. Please come earlier than you normally do. This will allow enough time for screening questions and to be at your appointment on time.

When you come to the hospital, staff will ask you why you are at the hospital. They will also ask if you have any of the above symptoms.

What if I have a symptom when I come to the hospital?

Patients who have any of these symptoms will be asked to wear a mask and use hand sanitizer. We will take you to your appointment, where we will talk about options for your care.

Visitors will be turned away if they have any symptoms during the screening process.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

If you need to, you can bring one person with you to your appointment. This person will go through the same screening process as you will. If your support person shows any symptoms during the screening process, they will not be allowed to come into the building. If you are unable to safely be in the hospital on your own, you may be required to reschedule the appointment you have come for. Children under the age of 16 will not be allowed into the hospital at this time. Please note that the Toronto Western Family Health team is the only area that will continue to see children.

Can I visit someone who is staying in the hospital, or can someone visit me if I’m an inpatient?

Each patient can have up to one visitor at a time. High risk areas may not allow visitors.

In special situations, more visitors may be allowed. This must be discussed with the unit manager ahead of time.

Could visitor access to the hospital change?

Yes, visitor access to the hospital may change if needed. We continue to monitor the situation closely to make decisions about visitor access. We may need to limit visitors to the hospital in the future if community spread of COVID-19 increases in Ontario.

Before coming to the hospital, please continue to check our COVID-19 site and UHN Twitter accounts (@UHN; @UHNPatientExp; @ipacuhn; @myUHNPortal) for updates.

    Will my appointments be cancelled?

When people come together, the risk of infection with COVID-19 increases. To lower the chances of COVID-19 for our patients and staff, we will be cancelling some clinic visits for patients who are currently well, and are coming to UHN for routine check-ups or other non-urgent reasons. These appointments will be rebooked for a later date.

Whenever it is possible, and also safe to do so, assessments will be done by phone or video conference.

What if I have an upcoming surgery?

Surgeries will continue as planned for now. Surgeries that are needed to save a life will go ahead, but other surgeries may be cancelled in the near future. If you have any questions about an upcoming surgery, call your surgeon’s office to speak with a member of the care team.

Will there be changes to the UHN shuttle bus?

In the spirit of social distancing, patients and visitors will not be able to use the UHN shuttle that travels between Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital until further notice.

Where can I find more information?

Information about COVID-19 is changing quickly. For the most up to date information, please visit Telehealth Ontario or UHN COVID-19. Please note: myUHN Support and most UHN clinics do not operate over the weekend however team members will do their best to respond as quickly as possible.

    Thank you,
    myUHN Support

@Simon: Our hospitals should have sufficient stretch for this though. There are a few hundred cases around Toronto, that's barely a single floor of a single wing of a hospital and as you know, most hospitals operate with "this space intentionally left blank".

I've heard people complain very often when walking through or visiting, why are our taxes paying for so much room per patient, and look, there's like 3 oxygen hookups and outlets etc - the answer is - because a "single" patient room is built to sustain 2, 3 or 4 patients.

I was told my visit is a follow up visit and since the CT had only shown a lesion on the spleen not growing, cysts on the liver not growing then they would like to postpone until fall. I said fine. The MRI is for the liver where I had two thirds of it removed due to bile duct cancer. And now the med I need to keep me alive are on back order. We were able to scrounge up one month's supply - 96 pills

Simon on yesterdays news they interviewed a woman who had seen two elderly people crying in their car. The lady went over and asked them what was wrong. They said they were too scared to go into the store due to the virus. The lady did their shopping for them. Yes! The elderly are suffering and it will only get worse There was a major line up to get into the store and shelves were bare

This is what I have been worried about. The elderly in this particular predicament.

I sent a text out to my elderly clients that if they need anything from the store to let me know and I will drop it off at there front door. Two clients already took me up on that offer. They taped the list the on front door and I went and picked it up, sprayed it with Lysol and set it in front of their door and texted saying it was there.

Plan on calling the Senior Center Monday to offer myself as available should anyone need this kind of help. I want to help in some way however small. If I can.

Yes, because our hospitals are the magical ones, that don't obey the normal laws of space and physics that all the other hospitals around the world do. Do you think Italy, Germany, Japan, France et al have dramatically worse hospitals than we do? Don't believe the hype that your local government gives you - when thousands of people are infected it all changes, because they are not designed to cope with this kind of pandemic.

Why are they telling people that they don't need to wear face-masks? Because they are important and the illustrious healthcare systems didn't think to get enough in stock despite a global pandemic being on the card for months. They don't want us to have them because they need them. They literally run out within a couple of weeks, and they come from China, which means they probably won't come.

Toronto will go under first - they have been busy importing people with the virus because no one has the guts to make the tough calls that needed to be made, and they still haven't made them! We're not meant to travel but people from infected areas can travel to here. Insane.

Trudeau has fucked Canada more than even many of us imagined possible.
