Here's a question for you folks

Question: In the Ten Commandments where it says "Thou shalt not kill" what does it mean? Like you shouldn't kill at all? Or can you defend yourself? Even if you don't kill.

    My response is:

Answer: In a big issue like killing another person, it is important to read all the pertinent Scriptures. "Kill" can be used in many different ways.....

Question: In the Ten Commandments where it says "Thou shalt not kill" what does it mean? Like you shouldn't kill at all? Or can you defend yourself? Even if you don't kill.

Answer: In a big issue like killing another person, it is important to read all the pertinent Scriptures. "Kill" can be used in many different ways:

    1. It can be used of an accidental death, "which killeth any person at unawares" (Numbers 35:11).

    2. It can be used of sacrificing an animal "Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people" (Leviticus 16:15).

    3. It can be used of death that occurs in a war "If he be able to fight with me (Goliath), and to kill me, then will we be your servants" (1 Samuel 17:9).

    4. It can also be used of a person deciding to kill another, and then doing it (premeditated murder). "And thou shalt speak unto him (Ahab), saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine" (1 Kings 21:19).

In Exodus 20 and in many places throughout the Old Testament Law (Exodus through Deuteronomy) the word used for "kill" is the Hebrew word "ratsach," which clearly means "to perform premeditated murder."

"Thou shalt not kill" what does it mean?

The King James Bible does not use bigger words when a smaller one will do. It is obvious from the context (that is, reading more than just this verse where it says "kill") that God is not talking about war, animal sacrifice or accident.

He is talking about premeditated murder.

We cannot take one small verse and use it alone to decide upon a doctrine.

We must read the whole of Scripture.

But thank God we have His accurate, preserved and clearly translated words in the King James Bible. By faithfully reading it, we may find an answer to the difficult questions of life.

It sounds like it would have been more accurate if it had used the phrase "You must not murder", like the NWT.

    No,no,no,no,no.

The only thing that will accomplish would be to make our society more like a group of supersticious primitive nomads. (who, historically, probably didn't follow these anyway.) 1. You shall not worship any other god but YAHWAH. Since he doesn't exist anyway, this is fundamentally a waste of time and energy for anyone in society. All the money that has ever been wasted on religion could have, and should have been devoted to solving real and tangible problems here and now.

    2. You shall not make a graven image and worship or serve it. (idols) See number 1. They are both the same waste.

    3. You shall not take the name Lord God in vain. (JESUS, YAHWAH) This definitely has to go, since opposition to religious tyranny must be allowed, encouraged, and strengthened. Dismissing criticism as blasphemy or apostasy is a nice way to avoid struggling out reality.

    4. You shall not break the Sabbath. (You should keep it holy) More control and wasted time.

    5. You shall not dishonor your parents. Paternal rights and family structure have value. Honoring somoen who does not deserve natural honor for their contribution to society detaches communities from reality and must go.Traditional rules bring traditional results and more of the same old oppression.

    6. You shall not murder. (kill) We've never needed religion to tell us that. If religious dominionism would stop causing most of the international conflicts I might even be prone to take this as anything other than a glaring hypocrisy.

    7. You shall not commit adultery Ownership of persons and commitment to keeping one's word are entirely different things.

    8. You shall not steal. While one can not have everyone running around and taking things, this command does serve to enforce class systems where it is extended beyond the litteral act of theft. Keep in mind property included human beings as slaves and concubines. Sickening.

    9. You shall not commit perjury. (lie or bear false witness) Agree. And I invite religious people to stop telling lies like evolution is false, invisible spirit forces are at work in the world, or that any god intends for anyone to do anything to anybody else.

    10. You shall not covet. A tidy way of enforcing class oppression. The motivation to work and achieve must not be collapsed with a justification of haves and have nots. Coveting included wives as property. Property. Property. Humans are not things. If you uphold this commandment, then you must uphold that slavery and the ownership of women was right and good. I can condense the ten commandments for you nicely: 1. Do whatever god says. 2. Religious leaders get to tell you what god says. 3. The ruling class and their religious allies deserve their priviledged position and you can not and should not do anything about it, especially rioting in the streets, tearing down systems of oppression, and building a new world without oppressive lies. Thus sayeth the ruling cla...err I mean the lord.

    And about killing...

It certainly didn't put as off limits stoning people to death for rather trivial infractions. So, again, only kill the people the leaders and power structure tell you to kill. And kill all of them...brutally. Or we'll kill you.

    ****Buddha is a false god.

Thank you for being honest enough to say (in your own way) that you have all the answers and do not want to consider any other's beliefs or spirituality as being valid. Typical Fundy shoving your beliefs down my throat without a whit, nor care as to my feelings and thoughts.

Seems to me we don't need the ten commandments, if only we had love.

willy sings: * all we need is love. love is all we need, love is all we need*

Isn't it funny when bad things happen or when certain things happen people have a habit of saying "Jesus Christ!" or "God have mercy"! or "Oh God!" or "Oh Lord!" Is it that we are asking God for help on this desperate occasion? Hibiscusfire

No, no more than when we say "Oh, shit!" we're asking a giant turd for help.
