Was this right? Cedars threatens, what say you?

bootlegged copies are available therefore there needn't be any copyrighting

I don't think anyone said that.

You can still retain copyright and freely distribute the book. This would be called "unselfish", "altruistic", "commendable" and "generous."

    -------

Bottom line: it IS about money. There's nothing wrong with exercising your legal rights to make money. So why not just own up to it?

"We're going to use the money for translation!" Really? How do we know that? Just because you tell us so? Many of us long ago stopped believing people's words and look to actions for evidence of their motives instead.

It takes virtually no time to publish an e-book on Amazon. You can even charge $5 or $50 for the book, it doesn't have to be for free.

Why hasn't the copyright holder done so? It's been 2 months since the Cedars video all the Mike & Kim followers lost their mind over. What progress has been made towards making this available via this easy route to publication?

jookbeard is right. Until evidence to the contrary is available, it's nothing but hot air.

Ruby , you keep ridiculing the importance of the books, yet there are personal testimonies on this very thread which show how important they were/are to people, maybe you were never a jw? and it not a sense of "entitlement" at all, do you ever stop to look at people in exjw activism who toil away for days/months/decades unpaid and selfless in the hope of reaching out to those needing help?

@konceptual99 I hear you and I'l make a mention of it. However it is not my call. I'm merely trying to assist in legitimizing the work. Whether others feel it is important or not to me an authorized source with anything carries weight and says "I'm valid".

With the plethora of bootleg illegal stuff out there it can water things down and give the impression to those coming out that it might not be trustworthy which is the exact opposite of what anyone here would want. I see this as a valid and serious concern.

    Ruby,

You are 100% correct. There is no automatic right to have the book for free or ignore copyright.

What is being repeated over and over again by many posters is that the genie is out of the bottle and has been for some time and what is needed is some pragmatism.

Providing an official route for obtaining the book whether in electronic or printed form is not difficult. If the copyright holder would prefer to ask people to pay then that's fine.

There is an immense amount of goodwill associated with Ray and now is the time to ensure that is maintained. People have had to make Hobsens choices over the past few years but there is now a real opportunity to change that.

@juandefiero you're so right I'd rather chase infringers than charge my $300.00 an hour rate for my expertise. I'm in it for the money. You just figured me out. Good grief man I'm not getting paid one red cent and never will!

The first step to fighting bootleggers is to make a legitimate source of the publication available. Charge a fair price for it, and the bootlegging will be virtually stopped.

Fighting the bootleggers now, prior to a legitimate copy being available, is a terrible and foolish waste of time and effort.

I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about the copyright holder.

Additionally, I noticed how you didn't respond to any of the legitimate questions about what progress has been made towards publication.

"Oh, we're fighting bootleggers." Ummm, OK, that needs to be done, but that doesn't mean she can't publish in the meantime.

I agree that people want a trustworthy source - so why not make one? What is holding that up?
Maybe I am over simplifying things but if it's about protection of copyright then having an official site does that.
If it's about protection of revenue then use Amazon and charge what you want.
IMHO you can't stop the bootleggers but you can be sure that 99.99% of the people out there will point anyone interested to an official site and source if it was there.

Why don't you get back to us, when you figure out the cost of translating a BOOK into oh, at least 15 different languages. I did a bit of checking online - it's about $25/page here in Canada, for business correspondence. Do you know anything about translation? The difficulty in conveying the proper meaning when idiomatic expressions are used? It is a big job.

He has already said it is about money.

    Jeeze Louise.

I absolutely did and explained the hold ups, however I didn't see where you addressed why revenue is needed for translation and other ancillary costs. You glossed over that.

    konceptual thanks

from what I understand Debra has had some serious illness recently and is only now able to take up this issue. all the work you are suggesting may be beyond her.

But at any rate we need to respect what and how she wants things done as she has been entrusted by Cynthia. we need to put our own wishes and needs aside.
