talesin, I think Juans original point was that an author wanting his book made into an eBook, I'm all ears and will have to admit to being neive about production costs in publishing and translating, I'm interested to learn though

Time is going to piss all over this issue. I'm as grateful to Ray as anyone can be but the truth is that the organisation is evolving so fast that CoC is bound to appear dated before too long.

The organisation he wrote about is the one I recognise but it's effectively dead now, replaced by a shiny new e-religion. R.I.P The Watchtower long live jw.org

Honestly, I wonder what modern JW's would make of the book or if they would even care. Most Jehovah's Witnesses simply aren't in it for the doctrine, it's not anywhere near as important as it used to be nor are the machinations of the Governing Body which are now completely demystified by their own broadcasts.

I'm not saying it isn't important to get Ray's works easily available again because it is, but perhaps it's not quite as big a priority as we like to think it is.

from what I understand Debra has had some serious illness recently and is only now able to take up this issue. all the work you are suggesting may be beyond her.
But at any rate we need to respect what and how she wants things done as she has been entrusted by Cynthia. we need to put our own wishes and needs aside.

You are right, this is not some kind of committee however the OP did ask for comments. I think that asking for some help to make an official channel happen would illicit a positive response.

The best way to earn money for translating the book is to PUBLISH THE BOOK AND CHARGE FOR IT.

It is about the money! And I don't really CARE if it's about the money.

In just an afternoon, you can publish an electronic copy to Amazon.com and charge whatever you want and get 70% of the revenue.

Why is it so hard to understand?

Pirating of many TV shows has gone down now that there are legitimate means to obtain the shows electronically (Hulu, Netflix, etc.)

Get the book published legitimately and the bootlegging will go down. I don't think it will ever stop.

I can't speak for others. However, if the copyright holder took an afternoon and got the ebook published on Amazon, the official link is the link I'd be sharing with people instead of the illicit PDFs.

    "But it's not that easy!"

    Yes. Yes it is: https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A37Z49E2DDQPP3&ref_=gs

The hardest part of publishing a book, nowadays, is writing the actual book. That has already been done.

@nicalaou makes a very valid point here. I've wondered the same myself. I think NOW currently there are still those that do care about doctrine as they were raised in the 70/80's like I was but I think he's right as time moves forward. couldn't agree more brother. I think there will always be a place but in general I think this is in fact a very valid point.

jookbeard, he has made a BIG point about the $$$, though, hasn't he? As I pointed out early in this thread, transfer of copyright takes at least 14 months - Mrs. Franz passed just over 2 years ago.

The copyright holder said it took 18 months for her to get the transfer done - that's reasonable, considering the gov't site says today, that the procedure takes about 14 months (and we all know that the wheels turn very slowly when dealing with gov't departments..

Mrs. Franz' will had to be probated. Let's say a minimum amount of time, 3 months. So, 18 months plus 3 months equals 21 months. Hmmm, it's been 24 months since Mrs. Franz died.

Do you see now, that the timeline shows that no one is dragging their heels?

Translation - if you want to get a feel for how difficult it is to translate things correctly, just click on a page that is NOT in your language(s), and have google translate it for you. You will quickly see that translation is not a literal word-for-word process. xx

PS. I did not find the book interesting, and only read some chapters. I really didn't care about the Brooklyn boys' bickering. I've known they were charlatans for 35 years. Nic has a good point.

Quick point on Google translate API and the like. Guys I deal with code and API's daily. I can tell you without any equivocation that you absolutely cannot use a tool such as this to translate a book. Will it get a lot of it right yes however much will be lost. In some cases completely changing the meaning. This just isn't the way to go.

I am skipping ahead and support Paul from Cleveland's idea to have an authorized copy of the book online with a volunteer contribution option.

Wikipedia does that and since I use it daily I am compelled to send them a donation every year...... On the basis that I'd rather have it available then not have it available. I think most of the ex JW community feels the same about this book.

I am looking at this as a world wide distribution in as many languages as can electronically be set up. There is money to be made in going worldwide on line. Just as there is money needed to keep it going.

Use that money to clean up the copyright issue with people like Cedar who needs to get his head on straight with this issue. The book is still a must read and we owe it to it's author to make sure it is accurate as to what he wrote.

Now that there is a copyright holder on the scene that law has to be respected.

That said the book, in my opinion, is no longer the one and only source to discover TTATT while it is still the best source to learn about the GB we now have access to the limp words of the GB members themselves. As well as all the tom foolery that the WT has ever printed from day one.

As a creative artist I am pleased that the book, in whatever approved form, will be once again made available under the copyright protections.

I think anyone with a braincell would have realised it takes more than "google translate" from a home computer to translate an entire book. I maybe mistaken but weren't CoC and ISoCF translated into Spanish,French and German?

nic that book will always be relevant even if at the end of the day it is only of academic interest in the future.

it is a gem that needs a proper setting and I am very glad that someone is going to look after it.
