Both the Chins were Chinese - their wives were Caucasian - both from my ex-wife's congregation in NH. I never had them as COs. I'm sure Walden could be incredibly arrogant. He'd been at Bethel for a long time. Was made the DO in Hawaii, I think. They both were in circuits in the mid-West. I have no idea where they are now.

Walden's wife's brothers were very good friends of mine. He, as one ex-bro pm'ed me, loved the "green handshake." That came as no surprise.

There was a DO over here in So Cal (may still be here), his last name is Howard, an older guy. I forget his first name. He was a very stern speaker . . .

So, would that make him Howard Stern? (I know, bad joke!!)

Yup it was Walden, because they served in HI and were mad that they got shipped in the midwest. From what I understand her mom was the one that painted the big-eyed kids. On Walden's Pond was a huge pain in the arse.

Hey was Mendenhall the guy who was married to the older chick? If not, do you know who I am referring to?

I can only remember a couple names. One was Prince and the other was Dieter Marone.

The first one is Bill Prince. He has been a CO for almost 50 years now. He might have been a DO also??

A definite company man who knows how to use the system to his advantage. Caught him holidaying in Mexico,

Hard to do unless he was sponsored by the rich boys in the congregation...

Sam Friend - Taught the TM school for elders

I was a poor pioneer kid when Friend came along - spent a week out in service with him. By the end of the week we got along fine.

    Yes sandy,

I remember him quite well. I don't remember his first name either, but he was always referred to as J.D.Howard from the platform (never by his first name). I remember that he was quite fond of lambasting the black sisters from the platform for some reason. He used to easily get angered at people and yeall at them over small, trivial matters which a more rational human being would have overlooked.

Anyway, he is no longer in the traveling work. I saw him a little over a year ago, and he doesn't look well. He appears to be in poor health.

looking glass, it sounds like the same brother chin i knew (though i heard there are two thomas chin COs out there, or were). i had him as one of my pioneer school instructers, and he was incredibly mechanical and impersonal. one day we had spent the morning in field service and then got back to class to share our experiences. i was on the shy side, and it took a lot for me to raise my hand. brother chin called on me and i related what i thought was a good experience about finding an inactive JW and encouraging him to come back, and when i got done telling my experience it was dead silent in the room. then bro chin goes 'can anyone tell sister **** what she did wrong?' i just slunk back in my seat while slowly different ones gave their suggestions. i rarely raised my hand after that.

another endearing moment with bro chin was at a district convention before i went on for a part. bro chin came over to talk to a sister and me before we walked out on stage. he said 'sisters, what was my advice about the proper length of dresses?' me and the sister looked down, because our dresses were on the long side, reaching down to our ankles. we're like 'uh, between the knees and the ankles.' and he said 'they are too long.' we were speechless. we were about to go on in a few minutes. then he's like 'well, there's nothing you can really do about it now.' the thing is, we had worn those dresses to our rehearsal, and he hadn't said anything about them, so we just assumed they were appropriate. but now this, right before we were to go on infront of thousands of people!! we were already incredibly nervous, and now the CO was upset with us. it completely ruined my convention experience.

    what an a-hole!!

I have known a few on this list. Interesting about G. Wells and what he presumably did to you at the meeting. Gary's past would dictate that he act with compassion and caring. Unfortunately as time goes on, some of us forget the hurt others have caused us, and then cause hurt to others. Gary was treated badly himself as a young man by a group of elders. Yet, he apparently has forgotten that.

I've known good and bad CO's and DO's. Some are a joy to listen to, some are great in the elder body. Yet most, sadly, are company men, that have a very difficult time in truly expressing God's love.

I was sad to hear about Jerry Griffiths on this list. first CO I ever met. Great speaker. Loving attitude toward the congregation. And, interestingly, the CO that launched Gary Wells into the Special Pioneer work and later the Circuit/District work.

Someone mentioned a Bro Howard... now I am not 100% on this so don't cash this check yet, but I believe he turned apostate.

    I'll confirm.
