They didn't like the idea of innocent death even at the hands of God. That counts for a lot.
Sab...Do you think that the deaths of thousands of innocent children attributed to a loving god only destroying evil counts for something? How can any reasonable person think that innocent children could be evil? I don't think that counts for anything other than feeding their belief in a god.

Children didn't have any rights back then, there were merely property of the head of the family. Destroying children is not calling the children evil it's calling their parents evil.
