i was once told that john denver (folk singer of songs like rocky mountain high and such) was on the tonight show one night.
he was a huge patriot and apparently had no love whatsoever for jw's.
apparently as the story goes, john gets up to sing a patriotic song and before he begins tells the audience "if there are any jehovah witnesses in the audience, you may want to leave right now.
How about some other ones - Like the wave hushed rumors when it was discovered that the Blue Smurfs were demonic. Reports were coming through that some witness families had walked in to thier nursuries only to find that smurf dolls were committing a vicous bloody attack on little defenseless babies.
I think they key is developing your own thinking instincts about the world, mankind, our community and relationships, our future and our past. Many things that you might have been forced to accept with out question, might not add up or really fit. Why is that? If the truth is the truth, should it not withstand independant scrutiny?
I takes time to step back and analylize everything in a big picture way. I have found the more you do that, the clearer things become, and the more peace you feel inside.
the wt society is so proud in promoting the notion that all jw's are so law-abiding and how they pay all their taxes.. yet there seems to be no moral problem for them when a jehovahs witness elder can be a full-time regular pioneer and at the same time collect unemployment benefits.
and not just in the short-term but in one case the elder has been a full-time pioneer for many years, all the while collecting unemployment benefits from the government.. so if there are any active brothers or sisters reading this post, could you please explain to me how this is not dishonest, just as dishonest as not paying taxes?
why are jw's the biggest 2-faced hypocrites around?.
I disagree with your statement. Unemployment does not work that way, check your state Workforce Development Agency, they will send you a free book on the rules of unemployment insurance for businesses and claimants.
Someone who is able to work cannot endlessly receive unemployment benefits.
Religion, no matter what brand it is, can be a positive infulence on people. Some people need the feeling of community, the sense of belonging, a "purpose" which they otherwise lack in their lives. Some people find that here, others find it there - and obvioulsy some have detached themselves from any identifiable relious form and function well.
I started with a 1100Vstar this spring and ended up with a HD Roadstar - what a year! In fact it is 32 degrees out side and I think I am going for a ride this morning
Actually 'witness' funerals tend to be very well done. They tend to be respectful in tone and time is spent focusing on the one time that people really need at such a time - what the biblical hope is for those who pass on.
I have attended quite a number of church funerals in the past and they have been embarrassing to me. But in contrast, time is spent at a witness funeral discussing what is Gods purpose for us, why it is we get sick and die if God loves us as well as what hope the scriptures hold out for those that do die. And what hope there is to see loved ones again. They do not take time presenting the rediculous notion that the person is now an angel perched on a cloud somewhere and God lovingly 'took' the person, but rather people are left with more of a comforting message and a hope to see the loved one again.
i remember reading a book on the jws by mainstream christendom author salem kirban, part of a series he did on "cults".
it was written late 60s/early 70s and opened with him on a brooklyn bethel tour.
he stated that the bethelites observed the old saying to"eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper" - he mentioned arriving in the mess hall at "prince-time".. was he observing things correctly about bethel meals, or was he imposing his own ideas on what he saw or was told?
I don't know where an expression like that would have eminated from. Of all the meals the morning meal was emphasised the most due to the fact that it was held with people sitting in predesignated tables and 'morning worship' (reading of the daily scripture and discussion) took place.
Lunch also took place at your table. Dinner was not attended as much as the other meals because after work many people had a long commute to get to where their congregation was, so many including myself rarely ever went to dinner. But all meals are open to everyone to enjoy and as much as they desired. Bethel actually did a wonderful job of preparing excellent meals.
Is anyone familiar with Josephine Spiteri, lived in the Bronx New York untill the early 80's. Got married to an ex-bethelite and moved to California. Current name I believe is Davenport?
Any one who has info - long lost friend and I have not been able to contact.
some of us have been out awhile, some of us may have just left, some of us still on the fence.. how do you feel towards the jw's and the organization right now, july 18, 2003.. compassion, hurt, hatred, anger, sorry, bitterness, helpless, robbed, cheated, or any other feeling you can think off.
which one describes your situation best ???????????.
all of us feel and handle situations with family differently, yet we are so much the same.. the day may come when family comes to you and says those dreaded words ........... " i can no longer have any association with you, not even on the telephone.".
I am somewhat ambivalent. I understand why they act the way they do, and that they generally are motivated to do what they think is right in the way they act. I just choose a different way. I am thankful for all of the good, and that can be lost sometimes - but as an active youth I really was safeguarded from a most of the problems that every other nonwitness young person struggled with. I had a bigger awareness of the world and of spiritual matters when I was young, and that was a positive thing.
I had good wholesome association, when I was younger a lot of treasured memories. Of course my view of the organization is different, I am not bitter or resentful. But I do stand my ground holding to different ideas. I think if someone finds satisfaction and meaning being a witness - more power to them - may they knock themselves out with thier appointed activity. Same for someone that wants to be a reformed Jew or a muslim. Just dont treat me or my family badly or I'll put a new day of the week on your calendar. I see the value in the energy that some spent trying to invalidate the witness beliefs, organization as perhaps a form of therapy to them.
I am of the opinion - that if you are going to bash a person for thier "beliefs", you had better be prepared to tell me what you think replaces them, and be prepared to back that up and be prepared for the same redicule.
