The difference between a religion, however strange, and a destructive cult
by Eustace ini think the difference has to do with ostracizing former members.
when a group does this, then whether or not they used "brainwashing" techniques to get peoplein, the people in have a tremendous amount of pressure being put on them to stay in no matter how badly they're treated.. the problem i face when it comes to studying this issue is that there is i'm having a hard time finding data on which groups do and do not ostracize former members.. here's a list of some groups i consider destructive cults with information on whether or not they ostracize former members in paranthesis:.
destructive cults.

by MC RubberMallet inaccording to 2 reports thus far from 2012 annual meeting, this is new light.
some may need more time and verification to post an opinion on this, but i plan on showing the scriptural fallacies of this "new light".

Tom Cruise awakening to Scientology, or will "special dispensation" keep him in?
by King Solomon inhttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2211469/is-tom-cruise-finally-seeing-light-scientology.html.
scientology's most famous adherent, tom cruise, is believed to be receiving special dispensation to see his daughter, suri, six, after ex-wife katie holmes withdrew herself and their daughter from the membership.
normally members are forbidden from contacting ex-partners who leave the 60-year-old cult.

Shunning - Irony, Hypocrisy and Tragedy - Watchtower jw.org
by wannabefree in***g7/09p.29 is it wrong to change your religion?***.
"no one should be forced to worship in a way that he finds unacceptable or be made to choose between his beliefs and his family.".
ironically, the religion and publisher of this statement is one of the biggest offenders with their shunning policy of its members who come to the conclusion that their form of worship is unacceptable.. for some, this severe shunning is too much to bear.. ...help me through this my old friends...i really did not want to be dfd!...i am fourth generation....i had already been shunned by my lifelong friends due to my outspoken words regarding my discovering we had changed the bible to make it say what jw's want it to...but now i have lost my family....oomps.

Restrictions On JW Members: What Are They??
by Cold Steel incan someone please explain the rules and regulations jws are expected to abide by as it pertains to the outside world?
for example, if a jw wanted to debate his religion on a site like this, can he/she do so without fear of reprisal from the church?.
and for those who have cable or satellite television, what are their restrictions?

You CAN continue associating with wordly/disfellowshipped family members AND get a higher education
by Anony Mous inquotes:.
-- therefore, explain that a parent's decision an a child's associates would not be based on religion, but on the young one's conduct ... it will probably help if you acknowledge that this does not mean that all other youths whom your children are around in the neighborhood or at school are no good.
some of them may be pleasant and decent, as some of your neighbors, relatives, and workmates are.
