So.....do you or don't you want them to come after you?
by Quillsky ini've noticed an interesting dichotomy in these discussions.
as a starting point, i understand that we are all different --- there is no "we" here except that we have all been, or been involved with, jw's.
but this is interesting..... some people complain about being "hounded" by elders and shepherding calls and previous "friends" and so on.

Scary stuff.... I've just realized that I could be disfellowshipped at any time
by Quillsky ini like to think that i have escaped the cult completely, since i, and members of my close family, faded away years ago.
however, i have recently realized that my "elder" uncle, my father's older brother, could technically have me disfellowshipped, such as if he figures out that i post on an "apostate" message board (i've tried to direct my cousin here), or sees me smoking in a restaurant in the small town we all live in, or hears from my father that my boyfriend and i have been away for a weekend together.. so i've recently discovered this fear.
although i believe i'm "out" i'm still trapped in a way.

Cognitive Dissonance
by Quillsky inthe term cognitive dissonance is thrown around often on this forum, and rightly so, imo.
it has been discussed before and will be discussed going forward, but another thread made me realize that perhaps now is a good time to re-open the discussion.. in brief, cognitive dissonance is how our minds work to close the gap between our attitudes and what we believe to be true, and what we do and experience to be true.
our minds want to close that gap, or reduce the dissonance.. so if what we believe doesn't match with what we're doing, we shift our minds to close the gap.

Volunteering
by Quillsky innow that you, as a former jw, have a few evenings and some weekend time freed up, and "charity" is no longer a dirty word, ........ do you do any kind of volunteer work?.
i'm seriously thinking about it..

Ever Heard Of Someone Being Disfellowshipped For Talking To A DFed Person?
by Quillsky ini haven't.. i propose that a shift, a change, begins here, spearheaded by those who are still "in".
what's the worst thing the organization could do to you?.
show some love to the next vulnerable disfellowshipped person you meet and speak to them, show them some humanity, some understanding.. if you're disfellowshipped yourself write an email today to someone you love who is not "permitted" to speak to you.. report back on here if it makes some kind of difference..

The sexual "morality" thing
by Quillsky inmy mother got involved with jehovah's witnesses in the 1960s/70s because mainly i think she didn't believe in the sexual "morality" or "immorality" of that era.
i believe she didn't see many other religions speaking out against sex before marriage and abortion.. and so she drew relatives and her own children down into the trap, the morass, the molasses, of anti blood transfusion and end-of-the-world clap-trap thanks to her well-believing sexual morality.. anybody else with family trapped because of the "morality" of jehovah's witnesses?.
