Funny, if people would pay better attention, they might catch the logical fallicies, attempts at thought control and outright contradictions. So I say- Yes pay good attention, and think too while you're at it.

Paying More than the Usual Attention
by WTWizard inhow many people hear that from the a$$emblies?
the funny thing, if we kept following the advice, the "more than the usual" would become the usual.
and there is only so much attention one can pay to the topic at hand.. and especially when it is the same crap you have heard every year since you were two.

Further Education - WTS ups the pressure
by dozy inthe wts are upping their opposition to further education.. at our recent co visit , much of a talk on youth concerned the evils of college & university education.. the meeting of the elders & ms included a similar but harder line section , stating that the appointed men should set an example.
the question was raised does an elder continue to qualify for his privilege if he , his wife , or his child goes to further education.
what attitude is he showing regarding the fds stated view on this matter?.

My son's little league team, and soccer team have been one of the great joys of my life. There is no feeling like coaching a group of 7 and 8 year old and watching them "get it". Youth sports are so good on so many levels. I am so glad I woke up while he was still young enough to enjoy this part of childhood.

This is interesting- 2 study articles about how to be a good missionary. Tells me that there may be some problems in this department. Maybe missionaries are coming home after a few years- dissillusioned and bent out of shape??? Maybe they are getting complaints from local congregations about superior, know it all missionaries coming in trying to tell everyone that their local customs are not biblical???
No statistics are published about the number of active missionaries- but I bet there is a story to be told there. I wonder what the average retention time is for a missionary??? Anecdotally, I would say about 2 years.

Its all about the cost of doing business in NYC. Brooklyn used to be a prime location on the docks. Now anywhere near a highway is a prime location. Just easier and cheaper to do business in upstate than in NYC.
Try driving to Brooklyn. Then try driving to Patterson. Which is cheaper? Patterson by a long shot. Cost of everything delivered to NYC is more because of the tolls, congestion, etc.

Worst Kingdom Melody lyrics- your votes?
by JimmyPage inmy votes for worst kingdom melody lyrics: song 125- "jehovah is on my side" (try singing these lyrics without laughing like beavis and butthead): "i know that in this crucial hour my faith will yet be tested/ around me swarms the devil's crowd like bees that were molested/ but i can ever beat them off beneath divine protection/ on those who love to bear his name god sets his deep affection.
" or how about song 201- "rejoicing with god's nation" (grab your thesaurus for this one): "in a land so good and spacious/ free from strife and things vexatious/ look!
a happy crowd vivacious/ in god's service that is efficacious.

Kiss the son lest God be angry and you perish in the way.
I'm sure that means something in some language.

Bye-Bye Brooklyn....were OUTTA there! Real Estate news.
by oompa ini was told today by a heavyweight elders wife, both of whom were at bethel for many years and are very well connected to the brooklyn brass, that all brooklyn bethel operations will be moved to wallkill and patterson.
in fact, there is a very exclusive walk-through next week for some of the top real estate investors/developers who will see all the properties, starting with the sands, and its lobby has now been remodeled to look just like a high-end hotel..................just fyi.................................oompa

I agree with Billy- operating costs are the primary reason. Some years ago, the Accounting Department started running the numbers on everything the Society does and started shutting down operations that didn't make sense. Window factory, cardboard box factory, fruit farms, etc, etc. Well, looks like one thing led to another and...here we are. Soon enough someone will figure out that is cheaper to pay someone else to print the literature too.

Absurdity in the Bible
by darth frosty innot to diss anyones beliefs, i thought this was humorous.. .
absurdity in the bible .
if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.--1 cor.14:38 .

How about the absurdity of the ransom.
An innocent man accepts punishment on behalf of guilty men and that makes the guilty men innocent. That doesn't meet even the most simplistic measures of justice.
Genesis seems to have been written primarily to show a direct link between God and the nation of Isreal. So they could believe that their religion was superior to everyone elses.

The "Historical Jesus" and Christian Faith
by Narkissos inin the wake of lovelylil's recent threads on the "historical jesus," a side question.. let's assume, for the sake of the discussion, that the four canonical gospels are not historical accounts of jesus' life, but a much later elaboration of christian faith in narrative form -- there are many reasons for such a proposal, but i'm not going into them right now -- let's just assume.. what do you think would be better or worse to find out in the historical field, from the perspective of christian faith:.
1. that there was no "historical jesus" at all, and that the gospels are essentially a religious myth made (hi)story, "the word made flesh" so to say;.
2. that there was a "historical jesus" completely different from the christian saviour -- for example, a galilean apocalyptic prophet and political zealot, trying to cleanse the nation and the temple from both the roman occupation and ritual disorders, with no interest at all in starting a new universal (i.e.

I couldn't resist hitting the bait. Your original questions- which is preferrable to the beliver.
I say Option 1 is preferrable to the beliver. This is because a "believer" believes in the historical Jesus and the holiness of the Church. If you're going to pull the rug out from under the beliver by saying that there is no historical Jesus, at least the Church is left to stand as the one true source of communion with God. After all, you did assume that the Church put together this great mythology which unites, comforts, and encourages the masses.
What is the saying- The believer firmly believes in Christ and the one true church, Holy, Apostolic, Catholic- something like that.
