Not Having Kids in 'This System....'
by lonelysheep inone of my former bs conductors and her husband decided when they got married, they wouldn't have any kids 'in this system'.
i know the world could be better, but i see no reason not to have children if that's what your wishes really are....and you're able to for that matter.
she just turned 34 and really wants to have a child.

Did the bookstudy overseer ever phone you for your "time" and nothing else?
by truthseeker inthis happened fairly recently.
my book study overseer who never calls if i am absent at the meeting, will call me with clockwork regularity at the beginning of the month and ask for my field service report.
has this ever happened to you?

Yes. After I had met with the JC and told them I am not ever coming back to the meetings and turned in my pioneer ID, they called me 9 months later to ask for my time and tell me I was scheduled to give a talk!!!! I laughed so hard at that.

Those that would never miss a meeting or field service no matter what...
by JH in.
did you know a few in your congregation that would never miss a meeting, no matter what.
even if it was 20 below zero or 100 f or if they were sick, they would be there anyways.. these people irritated me, because they wanted to show how good they were.. did you know any like that?

My mother used to drag us out in all kinds of weather. We had a rear-wheel drive car and used to drive on roads when they were sheets of ice, having accidents many times. It wasn't safe. Once I asked her if she would be bloodguilty if we got in an accident and died. I was beaten for asking that.
The cong always believed you should go to the meetings unless you're unable to get out of bed. That's why we'd always be sick, because we'd be in the KH full of germs.

Refusing magazines/books from JW relatives
by JustTickledPink inrecently my mother dropped in on us and in front of other people, very nicely handed me some trinkets aka dust collectors for my house and some wts magazines.
the way she handed everything to me at once i just held out my hands and took it all.. i threw the magazines away immediately, i consider them trash and don't even want them around... but then decided exactly what i was going to do.
i am going to buy a yard sale cross or virgin mary statue and give it to my mom.. i specifically told her i don't want any publications and she slipped them in anyways.... so, on that note, she hates any religious icons, i am going to give her something that she doesn't want.

Have the same prob with my JW mother. Have been asking her for 15+ years to stop sending me stuff. Believe me, I am all for good manners. However, there is a point at which it's appropriate to stand up for oneself. When repeated requests to stop giving offensive materials are ignored, that is one of those times.
It all hit the fan when she sent a card addressed to my new husband (not to me), full of witnessing. (It was soooo whacky, BTW, of the "call the men with the straightjackets" variety. I had mentioned to mom that DH had taken a vacation day off to unwind because he had been working so hard. She wrote about what a great "employer" the big J is, how he doesn't cause stress for his "employees", how she wishes he would convert to being a JW, etc. I wish I could have taken a photo of the look on my husband's face when he was reading it. Priceless!)
I ripped up the letter, put it in a Christmas envelope, wrote a note saying I would no longer be accepting any written materials from her. Tries to give me stuff, I inspect the parcel thoroughly before accepting it. Anything mailed is marked "return to sender, refused" and mailed back. I told her if she continues, I will cut off all contact with her. Since then, she has been behaving herself, but I know it's only a matter of time, and I plan on keeping my promise.
That event is what spurred me on to join these apostate boards and begin writing a book about leaving the JWs. So I guess it had a positive outcome after all, just not the one mom had hoped for!

Serves me right!
by strongbow ini gave blood for the first time some 18 months ago, i did it on impulse one day on the way home from work so stupidly i'd not eaten.
felt fine after and returned home where i started to feel faint and was sick so asked a relative (a jw) to phone me in ill for my pub job.
their response was 'serves you right for giving blood'.

The blood in any person is in reality the person himself. ... poisons due to personal living, eating and drinking habits ... The poisons that produce the impulse to commit suicide, murder, or steal are in the blood. Moral insanity, sexual perversions, repression, inferiority complexes, petty crimes - these often follow in the wake of blood transfusion." Watchtower 9/15/61 page 564
I nominate this for the "Top 10 Creepiest JW Quotes Ever" category.

JW sex offender database
by curlygirl ini read recently that the society has a database of pedophiles in the cong.
does anyone have any information on the subject?
documentation?
-
rebel8
I don't see anything on silentlambs about a database (?)
OP, did you hear there was a database? I hadn't heard that. I imagine they would have destroyed it, if they had one ever, to prevent lawsuits.
Are you in DC or Washington state? If you let me know, I will research to find out if there is a database in your state/district. Some states allow public access to them. If you're asking about this because you want to look up a specific person, you might get answers that way.

What would have to change for you to come back?
by _Atlas into those who have conscientiously walked away:.
what changes will at least make you consider coming back in?.
of course some will say nothing they do will lure them back?

Interesting thread! It would take an awful lot for me to go back:
1) After being in the Borg, I have a strong aversion to participating in organized religion. Therefore, they would need to disassemble themselves entirely.
2) The JWs would have to be totally respectful of each individual's varying interpretations of the mysteries of the universe, including any varying religious or philosophical beliefs, as long as they are not harmful to others. (This, of course, would require them to change their name from JWs to something neutral.)
3) The JWs would have to eliminate all their rules.
4) The JWs would have to issue personal apologies to me and all who were mistreated. Then, they would have to publicly apologize to everyone, admit they have been wrong about everything, settle all valid lawsuits against them, sell all their assets, and use the proceeds to create resources to help those who were wronged to heal.

Is the need to be in a religion a personality trait....................
by BLISSISIGNORANCE inlike the idea that alcoholics have a particular gene, certain mannerisms we inherit from parents or grand-parents, red hair is a recessive gene etc.
is religion inherited as a life style or emotional dependency?????????????????
is it low self-esteem and the need for others to decide what is right and wrong, how to live and even die???????.
-
rebel8
I do believe it's a personality trait, but is harmless, provided the person does not get involved with destructive groups.
like the idea that alcoholics have a particular gene
PS--This is a common misunderstanding. There has not been a gene discovered that's responsible for addictions. There have been groups of genes associated with a person having a higher chance of becoming addicted, but even those with all of those genes are not all addicts.

You can try posting this question on freeadvice.com, a site with attorneys (if this is a question pertaining to US law).
However, I really don't think there is any way in Hell this could ever be considered illegal nor actionable in court. I assume confusedjw is talking about the US. That being the case, the only issue here is that the JWs are bending or breaking their own rules, which they are more than entitled to do, legally. You didn't have a legal contract with the JWs to follow those rules.
I think us Americans tend to think because something is morally wrong or unfair, it must be illegal. But guess again, not so.
The only thing I can think of that would be considered illegal (in the US) is shunning, discrimination, or harassment, IF it occurred in the workplace AND it was because of your religion or religious beliefs. For example, if a JW employer created a hostile work environment [which has its own set of circumstances to qualify legally as a hostile work environment] for you just because you are not a JW, then that could be illegal.
