Jonah as Fiction
by Leolaia inthe book of jonah contains one of the most famous stories in the ot: the account of a cowardous prophet who was swallowed whole by a giant fish.
the only other mention of jonah in the ot however is absolutely silent about this remarkable story (2 kings 14:25), and there is much evidence that the book is a late tale written after the babylonian exile.
the book is unique among the twelve minor prophets for being mostly narrative and it has much in common with post-exilic haggada (such as the first-century lives of the prophets, which added considerably to the jonah legend), the "great city" of ninevah is little more than a distant, vague memory (as evidenced by such things as the anomalous title "king of ninevah" and the non-mention of the king's name in jonah 3:6), legendary touches like the giant fish and the magical growth of the castor-oil plant, and especially the late aramaisms rife in the book (such as spynch in 1:5, ht'st "to think" in 1:6, stq in 1:12, mnh in 2:1, and so forth).

Can someone explain to me the story of the tower of Babel?
by tippysock inin genisis 11:6 jehovah appears to be worried that mankind will be able to do anything they desire.
did jehovah scatter men and use different languages as a controlling measure to make us dependent on him?
what happened to freewill?

Dont be so hard on satan
by gringojj ini think people forget that satan was a creation of god, just like all of us and everything else.
obviously god had a purpose in creating satan.
god has love for everyone and everything, including satan.

WT speaks out on phone sex!! LOL!
by rebel8 ini was reading the "mobile phone" thread and then found the article below on the official wt web site.
i'm surprised they don't tell people to empty the garbage and polish their shoes when they get horny rather than engage in phone sex.
why the wt feels the need to comment on these topics is really beyond me, but it's good for a laugh.. http://www.watchtower.org/library/g/2004/2/22b/article_01.htm.

What do people do in a discussion that ticks you off?
by Terry inwe all enjoy an interesting discussion.
but, sooner or later it seem inevitable that somebody comes along and throws a monekywrench into the mechanism and the huge engine sputters to a halt.. what do people do in a discussion that ticks you off and stops the flow of conversation and turns it from being productive to unproductive?.
is it as simple as disagreeing with you?.

James 4:5 -- A Quote From a Lost Apocryphal Scripture
by Leolaia inin defense of its fundamentalist approach to the bible and especially its belief that the bible is the word of god and inerrent, the wts frequently quotes from 2 timothy 3:16: "all scripture is inspired of god and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness".
we must've heard this scripture thousands of times as witnesses.
the words from eldad and modad quoted in hermas, vis.

JWs who were actually cool
by Black Man inwe always talk about the crazy j-dub fundy types, but i knew some cool jws (co, do, bethelites, pio) during my time.
this is kind of a "where are they now" post along with acknowledginig some jws who were cool and down-to-earth.
as with most "cool" and good people in the borg, most of them are either not jws anymore (burned out) or are not "serving" in responsible positions (funny how that works, isn't it).
