I hearby nominate hibiscusfire for the most stupid question ever asked on this board category:

How many light years would it take for a bug to fly from Africa to South America?"

And this is part of the argument for the Young Earth theory.

Wow, that question is too interesting to pass up. I couldn't help myself. I googled up some information.

The average speed of a fly is.... 4.5 MPH

The speed of light is....669,600,000 MPH

The distance between Buenos Aries and Cape Town is ... 4262.8 miles.

A fly would take 39.5 days to travel the distance, providing he flew straight, not in a parabola.

To cover the same distance, a light beam takes 0.022 seconds. The light would fly in a straight line.

Of course, a light year is not a measure of speed but distance.

The distance between Buenos Aries and Cape Town is 0.000000000726736 of a light year. A blip. A fly is a blip, too
