****Yet acceptance would mean accepting a person and their wrong doings. Wouldn't it be loving to help or teach the person to do the right thing?
Now we get to the crux of your "issue". You do not show unconditional love my dear. You want to beat into the person what they ought to be doing to make Jesus happy....please spare us. Spook wrote it wonderfully!!!
A lot of people think of Christianity as a moral religion: what is right and wrong, what not to do, people in "Spiritual High Places" (ie, priest) telling you how to live. The problem with that is if you follow all these things, you may not really live a moral life. You may be following the rules, but not be widening nor deepening your ethical sense and well being as you grow up and live a more complex life.
I bet you didn't realize there were writings called the Jesus Sutras did you? But I doubt you will be interested in this as you might learn something. Remember....to teach is to learn. To be an effective teacher you must LISTEN to your pupils. LISTENING means to "take to heart".
Verse 81 of the Tao Te Ching:
Honest people use no rhetoric;
Rhetoric is not honesty.
Enlightened people are not cultured;
Culture is not enlightenment.
Content people are not wealthy;
Wealth is not contentment.
So the sage does not serve himself;
The more he does for others, the more he is satisfied;
The more he gives, the more he receives.
Nature flourishes at the expense of no one;
So the sage benefits all men and contends with none.

I did for 16 years and it made no difference to me or anyone else. The world is a better place for me now that I follow my own moral code based on karma which is a lot like Jesus' principle of do to thers as you would have done to you/do something to hurt someone and you will get it back twice as bad.
Right on Crumpet!
I believe and apply this ideaology to my self as well.

Don't know who to thank or cite, but the following just demonstrates what absolute crap this doG and his commandments story is.
Background: Laura Schlessinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call her radio show. Recently, she said that as an observant Orthodox Jew homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned in any circumstance.
The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura:
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learnt a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them.
a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev 1:9) The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neigbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?
e) I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Ex. 35:2 clearly states that he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?
g) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, although this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
i) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev. 24:10-16). Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help.
Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging. -

doogie:
Ok so being the case doogie what really inspired you to feel this way?
Where did you learn this or who did you learn it or hear it from?
What would make people care enough to do the right things?
1) umm...ethics, morals, values. i'm not really sure what you're getting at, but it's an inner feeling of right and wrong. my conscience. Well God gave us a conscience you know. He also gave us choices.
2) to add to #1, it's shaped by your experience (the things you read and see, and your culture (what your family and your immediate and extended society believes). i also believe that there are evolutionary pressures that have placed a moral code upon humans. (read: not JUST the bible. but on the other hand, i'd be a fool to say that the christian society i was raised in had no effect on my sense of ethics). Most of the things you read and see eg philosophies came (if you are really interested in seeking the truth) from the bible. Eg. Be slow to anger.....Wisdom is better than silver and gold.
human morals are a melting pot of so many things, which is evidenced in the vastly different moral codes throughout the world. (i.e. some cultures actually still practice child sacrifice.) to say that the moral code of the 10 commandments is inherent to all humans is simply not true. some societies place great value on murder, rape, and theft in certain contexts. If you read the book of Proverbs (if you haven't done so already) you shall see moral values being taught and there is no "babying excuses" for it.
3) the "right things" according to which society? (see answer #2) Any society. You as an individual can feel what is right or wrong. Jesus sent us the Comforter (The Holy Spirit) to guide us and the Holy Spirit plays a big part of your conscience so the devil also confuses the mind. Hibiscusfire

katie:
I think if people followed my 10 commandments the world would definately be a better place:
2. Get a life
Getting what kind of life?
Usually when people say get a life to someone is it because they believe that having fun at all costs is great?
Sometimes people who say they live life to the fullest end up in some kind of trouble.

Spook: "Only for humans?
Yes. In our context it would be confusing to extend the argument to love as a feeling for other things like movies, stuffed animals, foods, etc.. If you are a lover of animals or plants I believe love would apply also. Do you have a pet? God said " Let everything that has breath praise the Lord" Do you believe animals can sense things too and also what people cannot see?
Yet acceptance would mean accepting a person and their wrong doings. Wouldn't it be loving to help or teach the person to do the right thing?
No. Only after accepting them on the level of humanity and being can you deal with actions on the level of doing. So when you accept the murderer as he is how would you help him? What if he doesn't want to change would you still love him? Or would you show him tough love and try to reason with him anyway?
Trying to change somebody is fundamentally a form of opposition. There is no hiding behind *good* intentions. There is struggle over ideas that is tested in reality. That is all. If you oppose something, come right out and say it. Don't confuse the issue with love and good intentions. There is a future you want and a future I want. Let us struggle over the issues in reality, dealing with things as they are. There must be some sort of love in you to feel this way for mankind Spook HF

I can't speak for Katie but perhaps she means get a life - ie you're educated, you know whats right and wrong, do you really need to consult an old book written by men from a different age to work out what is the right and wrong thing to do.I knkow its not right to kill (under most circumstances) so I won't - not because a book said so.
I won't sleep with other women's husbands or others men's wives, without consent of the spouse - not because of a rule about adultery - just because I don;t think its very respectful.
I won't steal - unless I am starving, but I will steal if I am starving and I don;t believe anyone who steals because they are hungry is committing a crime. Its a worse crime to let yourslef die surely.
As someone has already said - parents should only be honoured if they deserve to be and actually that command in itself is all i need to prove that the bible aint from any kind of God. Respect and honour are earnt not arbitarily awarded because you once had a shag and gave birth to a kid. There are some terrible parents and their children owe them little or nothing. Does a five year old have to honour the father who rapes her each night? Does the boy who witnesess his mother beating his father honour her?
I'm glad you asked this question because the more I've thought about it the more I've changed my views. I did sort of thing the 10 commandments were a reasonably good thing but i actually see now that they are downright harmful to apply and definitely not the sort of thing we should ever teach our children.
(Hey I wonder if this is why someone in the first century thought oh sh*t those rules are such a pile of pants and so outdated - here lets say god's son inserted two new laws which are much more relevant ... quick where's me pen?)
