Redvip2000 : You forgot a big important factor. A lot of armament was sold and used, pockets were lined and wallets got fat. The goal of the war was achieved.

In Civilization: The Six Killer Apps of Western Power, London (2012), Niall Ferguson reports (p.309) that

By the end of World War II Britain had amassed an immense debt of £21 billion. Much of this was held in foreign hands, with around £3.4 billion being owed overseas (mainly to creditors in the United States), a sum which represented around one third of annual GDP.

On 31 December 2006, Britain made a final payment of about £45.5m and thereby discharged the last of its World War II war loans from the US.

The Taliban had more than a year to prepare to take over the country.

They did well in that regard.

The enemies of Allah are leaving, this is Allah's will.

    Praise Allah

By 1946, the blast heat and radiation had killed around 74,000 in Nagasaki and 140,000 in Hiroshima. Of course years later many were still dying of radiation

Here is an interesting fact that makes many exjws wish that Jehovah was true and that he was going to wipe out nuclear bombs soon.

A typical modern H-bomb has explosive power of 300,000 kilotons, about 20 times as much as the bombs used on Japan.

One bomb today could kill 2,800,000 INSTANTLY.

100 nuclear bombs could wipe out the United States population of 330 million INSTANTLY.

The rest would die off in less than a month in excruciating pain.

Considering that the USA population is not concentrated in just cities but spread out in farms also.

Russian arsenals which are bigger could be dropped over a city, and such a bomb like that can easily kill 500,000 people rapidly--in a matter of seconds. Several million more would die of radiation poisoning.

200 such bombs dropped over a range of cities and spread out farms would kill something like 100,000,000 people (out of about 300,000,000) and destroy almost all the infrastructure for energy (oil refineries, power grids,...) communications, transportation, manufacturing,... The resulting soot would probably cause cool dark weather, disrupting even what farming could be carried out without fuel, fertilizers, etc.

Radiation sickness would be widespread. Probably most of the people not killed in the initial strike would soon die.

Maybe bands of hunter-gatherers and small-scale cultivators would somehow survive. But it would be survival like millions of years ago----Cave men senerio.

This is one thing JWs are not concerned and lose sleep over. Because they believe with all their heart that Jehovah would never allow that to happen.

Yet he did allow it to happen in Japan.

Are Japanese people sub-creatures and we are not? And that's why Jehovah would never allow Nukes to hit America?

Just for calibration, the U.S. and Russia have between them some 18,000 nuclear warheads

Quote: "The Taliban now hold the keys to an untouched trillion-dollar trove of minerals including some that could power the world's transition to renewable energies, but Afghanistan has long struggled to tap its vast deposits. ... And Afghanistan sits on a huge reserve of lithium that has not been tapped to this day," said Guillaume Pitron, author of the book "The Rare Metals War. Afghanistan is also home to rare earths that are used in the clean energy sector: Neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium. The country's untapped mineral riches have been estimated at $1 trillion by the USGS."

Could that be the reason why China, which many people call 'the factory of the world,' would be interested in Afghanistan?

Of course, that may be the main reason. The same article quotes "Ryan Hass, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Brookings Institution think tank. Hass, writes:

"While Chinese leaders are "not enthusiastic" about the Taliban takeover, "they will not allow principle to stand in the way of pragmatism, Beijing's lack of development at its major investment in the Mes Aynak copper mine demonstrates its willingness to exercise patience in pursuit of return on investment."

But, there are other possible reasons. All nations, want good relationships with nations with which they share borders. As China's Asian rail and highway network continues to expand across Asia, Afghanistan could be an important link in extending that network to Africa, where China is already building rail links. (The border region China shares with Pakistan is too mountainous for a rail link, although China-Pakistan co-operation has built an excellent highway through the region

And (surprise, surprise) the new government in Afghanistan may like to have the same development in Afghanistan,

And further to my previous comments on any agreement between China and a Taliban controlled new government in Afghanistan, there is this article, first published in the New York Times and re-published in India's 'The Economic Times.'

It says in part, Quote: "Unlike the United States, China brings no baggage to the table in Afghanistan. China has kept a low profile in the country since the U.S. invasion, not wishing to play second fiddle to the United States in any power politics. Beijing watched as Washington’s foray in Afghanistan became a messy and costly morass. In the meantime, China provided Afghanistan millions of dollars in aid for medical assistance, hospitals, a solar power station and more. All the while, Beijing was fostering stronger trade relations, eventually becoming one of Afghanistan’s largest trading partners.

With the U.S. withdrawal, Beijing can offer what Kabul needs most: political impartiality and economic investment. Afghanistan in turn has what China most prizes: opportunities in infrastructure and industry building — areas in which China’s capabilities are arguably unmatched — and access to $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits, including critical industrial metals such as lithium, iron, copper and cobalt.

Though critics have raised the point that Chinese investment is not a strategic priority in a less secure Afghanistan, I believe otherwise."

I was not a fan of trump personally, but I agreed with him negotiating with the taliban, and I agreed with him getting the ball rolling on getting out. This withdrawal under Biden is a mess though, just listening to the news in the last 6 months it was obvious the taliban was poised to take over the country again. Anyone remember what happened after Russia left?

More priority should have been put on getting u.s. citizens and our afghan allies out months ago. I'm not sure how this could happen. I honestly wonder if Biden just thinks there are enough people thay just want us out as quick as possible and the hell with the fallout.

China is going to have its own problems with Afghanistan. They share a small border with Afghanistan, and will have to contend with balancing their interests along with their relationship with Pakistan.

China also has a little problem with the Uyghurs, and the area where the chinese border is with Afghanistan could turn into a mess for China.

I have a hard time seeing China just waltzing into a country like Afghanistan.

The irony is the chi coms will walk in and smile, make nice for a while, then begin “relocating” the natives to concentration camps to harvest their organs…. Just like they have with the uyghurs
