as far as I know alcohol wasn't a factor at Newtown

society picks and chooses which 'guilty pleasures' it allows, and if the cost/benefit stay acceptable and the public isn't outraged then the status quo continues

    alcohol - yes

    gun - yes

    marijuana - no

we might be starting into a period where marijuana and guns are moving in opposite directions legislatively... and thats ok by me..

I revise. Autistic children can't relate WELL to other people and or commicate WELL with them.

Sure, there are some who can use an IPAD, a horse, a dog, or a puppet for communication medium. But, it's not the same. THere is a barrier in their communication. You are right, as it's a spectrum. Alot of folks in silicon valley have autism. I was a math major in college for some time, and I 'bet' some of them had it too. They didn't blow anyone up, and most will not. But, they do and can become violent and not willing to adapt to changes.

At 20 years old, there are other mental disorders that could have been developing too. And, he could have had some type of defiant disorder. The psychologists in my relative's case keep asking whether or not he's violent . . . .

As usual, Besty, we are in complete agreement. I must ask, though, how do you reconcile the carbon emissions of cannabis with GW ?

America was founded on our ability to outgun the Brittish and Native Americans. We are rebels, wary of government, and many want the ability to overthrow it if it were to become like Syria, Egypt, or North Korea. Oh, the Army may have nuclear weapons , drones, and more powerful ammunition, but we have masses. It is engrained in our society that one is free if one can fight (and win) over government. Yes, we are made up of a bunch of lone cowboys. The socialist perspective that has overtaken our country along with the fiscal cliff and talk of a 'one world' government is also fuel to the back of American's minds. It's not that socialism is bad, it's that we fear individual rights to change the government could be thwarted. Hence, more fuel to the notion that the individual right to bear arms is intrinsicly linked to freedom.

Run your tape forward 50 years and think of an America with a majority of entitled socialist Hispanics and with 2A rights - that Arizona border gonna be at Tucson before you can shake your old white butt...;-)

PS British Britain not Brittish Brittain :-)

“… society picks and chooses which 'guilty pleasures' it allows…”

Yep. That’s right. Society decides what it allows. But this discussion is about remedying something. Right?

If our remedies are constructed on a premise that is valid when equally applied to other antecedents fitting the profile at issue then we have to either apply our remedy equally or else tailor our underlying premise.

Otherwise what we advocate is weakened. If a remedy is to gain traction is should be as strong as possible.

As I said before, my comments on this point are not to rile. I’m only trying to get folks to think harder about remedies they conceive so those remedies can be tailored for more probable acceptance by the societies each of us want to live happily within.

We are, after all, somewhat at the mercy of what society will pick. Right? If so then we best form remedies more likely to be picked. Right?

Should we advocate banning ultra-high proof alcohol?

I think this is a false analogy, alcohol is a pleasure vice and generally kills slowly, fast if used without moderation. To me this is also an issue of freedom. Some whacko has once again violated others freedom to live in the worst way possible, alchohol does not do that. To protect basic freedom (the right to live), there needs to be some changes to make it harder for whackos to get their hands on firearms and other implements of mass destruction, fertilizer, dynamite etc. The families who have been effected are owed this as a gesture of good faith at a minimum IMHO. I think the solution goes much deeper though, as I mentioned at the outset.
