Aw Snap---I agree with you! If I were a waiter and I knew certain ones just didn't tip 15 to 20 % for good or better service, I wouldn't love serving them, especially if I could make more $$$ doing the same thing for someone who tipped well.

I knew a waitress at a Marriott who regularly got a party of 10 plus who stayed at their table for an entire evening ordering drinks and enjoying live music. They typically stayed for 4 to 5 hours! She would get no more than 15 or 20 dollars for her efforts. She was regularly distressed when they'd saunter in. They were very sweet people but lousy tippers. The other waitress I knew there did the same amount of work and was thrilled with the tables, the tables my party generally stayed at. Eventually, we began to ask for the other waitress just because we felt awful for her.

I never said you do not lead in medical skills and education. You do!!! But your health care system IS retarded because it only benefits people with money.

In the same vein, don't try to defend that your system provides the same crappy treatment for everyone, and forces those with serious illnesses to endure long waiting lists, and imposes a non negotiable fee on everyone in the country. No sir, do not try to defend your retarded system. Reason with me? Since when is questioning ridiculous and baseless assertions being unreasonable?

To say that our system only benefits those with money is outrageous. First of all, not only do we have the most advanced specialists in the world, we also have Medicaid and Medicare for the poor. And people say Americans are arrogant.

I don't care about health insurance. I care about tipping.

Nath - sadly the USA does not lead in education - last stats indicate that it falls behind in literacy rates and coincidentally that could be linked to the fact that it also has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy per capita in the world. I believe it stands at about 15-19 ranking for literacy in science, math and reading - the mainstay of education. Certainly it has some of the top ranked universities in the world, but given the actual literacy rate component, the basis for payment to attend those schools might be found in a high number of foreign students perhaps. sammieswife.

    I forgot about this thread...

Interesting to see the different views on tipping. I never knew it was such a passionate subject to so many.

And for starting the whole Brits with bad teeth thing...my apologies. I know that it was stereotyping, not everyone has bad teeth, but I thought it was kind of a national joke amongst Brits themselves, sorta like we joke about our obesity problem over here.

Minimum wage at McDonalds is close to 3 times minimum wage for waitresses.

I don't believe that's the case in Ontario. If that was true here McDonalds employees here would be earning at least $24.75 per hour here.

Here the minimum wage for someone who serves liquor is currently $8.25 and will go up to $8.90 on March 31, 2010.
