I liked Manera, he married later in life.

Strangely enough, Ciranko is the only other one I recognize on the list.

The other one I liked was Balzer, bald guy.

The newer ones tend to be younger and pretty cocky. One CO back once 3 year cycle, removed above 10 to 15 oldtime elders in this circuit. He used to go overtime 45 minutes for each of his talks...and dared the elders to say anything.

I can remember when the COs wrote up their own talks that were definitely more exciting than the outlines the WTS gives them now. I can remember too that they would lambast the elders on Thursday night, letting all their sins hang out. The COs would actually make it a point to spend some individual time in d2d or studies with each regular pioneer. That's when the COs and their wives had to make the same pioneer quotas the rest of us did.

COs and their wives rarely go out if ever on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. D2d in the am and RVs and studies in the afternoon with a cutoff at 3:30. So few of the rank and file had studies that could meet in the afternoon, that COs were reduced to making "shepherding" calls on the inactive or discouraged. For once people at least were called before they dropped by.

The one name I can dredge up was a CO, last name of Friend. He was CO in Central Washington State back in the late 50s. I can't say that I enjoyed his ministry. I was 18, nearly 19 at the time, and met him while I was in jail! I'd left home because of an overly abusive dad, moved in with a JW family whose eldest son was my best friend. I needed a battery for my car, and went battery shopping at a local farm implement company with my friend and a buddy of his, who although younger, knew his way around "midnight shopping" so to speak. Because I was eldest of the three, I was held in jail for some time because there had been a rash of similar shopping expeditions all up and down the Yakima Valley in Central Washington. Eventually, the real ringleader of the group of teenagers that had been raiding the implement facilities was caught, and I was allowed to go to trial, with the result being that I was given two years probation, which was later rescinded, and removed from my records. "Brother" Friend came to see me with the local presiding overseer and tried to convince the judicial committee that I should be disfellowshipped. I was pretty tight with the Congregation overseer, so was given a lesser sentence, which was as near being disfellowshipped as possible. (I believe it was called "probation" in those days) I had to attend all meetings, sit in the back of the Kingdom Hall, and was not to speak to anyone at the meetings. I was forbidden to join in singing the Kingdom Songs at the meetings! In addition, I was engaged to be married to young lady, the youngest sister of my best friends mother. The judicial committee decided that I could not get married to her. She herself had not been baptized yet, although her mother and father had been witnesses for many years, and had raised 7 children, all but one of whom were witnesses. (the one non-witness had married a Catholic fellow). The eldest sister, was in fact a missionary assigned with her husband to serve in Southern Africa. My intended bride to be's parents felt that the judicial committee had overstepped their boundaries so to speak, so they drafted a letter to the Watchtower Society appealing the judicial committee's decision. The Society wrote to the committee that they'd overstepped the guidelines, suggesting that a new course of action should be adopted. The judicial committee did review their handling of my case, and agreed that their sentencing was too harsh, and while they met with me and told me I was no longer on "probation" so to speak, they never let my fellow brothers and sisters at the Kingdom Hall know about the relaxing of their decision. The harsh treatment at the hands of the judicial committee was the crack in the ice that led to my eventual fading away from the "truth", even tho my parents and some of my siblings remain JWs to this day.

I do not remember ANY of the CO's except for vaguely. I was just a kid and remember there was usually an extra meeting or a different time when they came.

I mostly remember the elders and a couple of pioneer ladies who really stuck out-for opposite reasons. One was the nicest lady in the world, the other was her evil twin. In fact one was tall, thin and elderly and kind-,mom/grandmom to many of her own and everyone else who loved her, the other was in her late 30's, single, very very stout and just plain mean. I always got stuck w/her out in service(often the youngest-with no status, not baptised, mom wasn't baptised till right before I left and dad was not a JW to any degree). She NEVER wanted to go for coffee, was mean to me, the people at the doors and I think even the dogs were afraid of her. She was the quintessential janitor at night and always had a horrid stinky car. She was enough reason to leave, if I was just leaving because of unpleasant people.
