What do you think would happen if aliens landed?
by Abaddon inlet's paint a little picture.. it's spring 2002. at 1200h gmt a radio and tv announcement is broadcast on almost all conventional frequencies, in appropriate formats according to the medium and the area.. it's from a bunch of pale violet humaniods who have come "in peace for all qw'z'x>kind".
they say they want to meet up with the un in full cnongress.. disbelief rapidly turns to amasement when cnn and other news-services provide footage of a large alien vessel descending into the river near the un.
large in this case means 5km long... and wisely, none of the sac jets sent to have a look pull a will smith or anything stupid, although one gets nudgeed gently away by an invisable beam of some sort when it gets too close.. let's say it becomes apparent the aliens are utter benign, happy to hand out technological aid, scientific knowledge, and hope to welcome the people of earth to your typical peaceful federation of planets (about 5,00 different species all told).. how do you think people would react?

Unity & the noosphere (by a Jesuit palentol...
by Abaddon ini was introduced by means of a reference in a novel to a french scientist, theologian and philosopher, teilhard de chardin (1881 - 1955).
i've not actually read any of the guy's stuff, as i only today got round to having a look on the internet, but it's interesting stuff.. as a paleontologist, de chardin has a rather dodgy past - he was either taken in by or part of the piltdown man conspiracy.
as a theologian he was an unconventional jesuit priest and roman catholic, eventually assigned to china due to his unconventional beliefs.

Sheep and Goats
by Abaddon inthe use of sheep and goats as figurative images of good and bad people gave me pause even when i was a witness.. i've lived in the countryside, and know that sheep are quite possibly some of the most stupid mammals i've ever observed close hand.
it's not unknown for a ewe to stand at the edge of a ditch whilst giving birth, with her arse hanging over the edge, with the inevitable 'splash' after the final heave.
some highland breeds might be smarter, but not a lot.

Creationist Red Herrings
by Abaddon ineverytime i hear someone say anything about how there are 'no transitional fossils' (fish-amphibians, amphibians-reptiles etc.
), i generally ignore it.. why?
because if they say that, it tends to indicate the person saying it has restricted their research to pro-creation sites that generally repeat one of the classic fifty or so creationist arguements.

Harry Potter Movie
by Abaddon ini saw this on saturday and.... now i am a servant of the dark lord bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!.
... it was very cool.. visually very faithful to the books; eerything looks as it 'should', which is really hard.
the screenplay was an acceptable compromise between the brevity neccesary in converting a book to a film, although one part (the dursley's leaving privett drive to escape the letters and being hunted down by hagrid) was done very badly.. the actors were excellent, and (thank god, nothing against american's, but i object to english stories being americanised for no reason other than american cultural imperialism) an excellent cast of top-quality 'supporting' english, or i should say british (as robbie coltraine is great as hagrid (and big!

Jesus, Metaphor, and Allegory...
by Abaddon in... are three small towns in kansas.. well, they could be.. i saw an episode of this australian sci-fi series called 'farscape' a while back.
in it one of the main characters gets mistaken for a god on this planet he's stranded on.
although he loved the adulation, it all got very nasty when they realised he wasn't a god after all.. it made me think.

Moments of coolness...
by Abaddon in... my girlfriend is training to be a classical singer.. the conservatory she attends had a project week this week that culminated in three nights of peer gynt, the first of which was last night.. peer gynt is a fairly weird opratic production, but it doesn't fit genre's very well; sort of becket with singing and a bit of dancing, arguement with god/self/same thing... although i don't speak dutch properly (or german) yet, so that's a vauge synopsis.. anyhow, my gf was in the choir.
i just thought it was so cool that i could pick her voice out of sixty or seventy, clear as a bell, shining away.. her voice is developing from something impressive to, well, wow, and it's on nights like that i really get to appreciate it.. .
keep on rocking in the free world...
