Encounter at McDonalds
by jws inso i was helping some friends move and it came time for a break, i took my kids to mcdonalds.
we're sitting there and there's a family across from us, man, wife, 2 kids under 4. in the next booth is this older guy, maybe late 60's.. i'm not really paying attention, but then this older guy says something to the family about everybody being "me-first" these days.
so that caught my ear.

Improving Critical Thinking Skills
by GloomySunday ini'm out of the jw religion, but still have trouble thinking critically.
when i was in, i had no idea what a logical fallacy was, i used all sorts of false arguments, yes, even "if man evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?".
i would fall for just about everything.

~Humble and Childlike~
by freeflyingfaerie inyou remember the 'encouragement' to be teachable, humble, like little children.... well, children ask questions, and lots of 'em.... so, what happens when we keep on wondering and have questions that demand answers?.
according to jw's, a person has to stop being teachable like little children.
a person is told not to do any real research (which requires humility, a sense of wonder, and openness to new ideas and concepts)....for fear that research done outside of the organizations approved sources- their own- a person may discover contradictions and lies.

Foreign language groups
by dissonance_resolved inforeign language groups are the fastest growing groups of jws in the western world.
the best and brightest jws are drawn to them for the privileges, the challenge, the feeling of being special.
but in my experience, being in one of these groups has a side effect.

A book I'm reading
by ldrnomo in"the story of my people" edoardo nesi:
our inner thoughts are our greatest inner riches and they mean little, almost nothing, unless they're expressed, and everything we fail to say or write or live is lost----mere dust.
so, how much have you lost?

There are defining moments in every man's life?
by Narcissistic Supply inthere are defining moments in every mans life.defining moments of how we see ourselves.. defining moments of what we identify with.. defining moments of what we stand for.. defining moments of what we believe.. i think all of these defining moments need to be examined.. they need to be examined for their factual basis.. they need to be examined from a different perspective.. its tough to keep it real when everybody wants a hand out.. its tough to keep it real when everybody has an agenda.. its tough to keep it real when everyone [around you is] a snake oil salesman.. its a little complicated.. somehow you have to pull your head out and figure out what is actually truth and not the mnemonic that vvatchtower says is truth.
somehow you actually have to think for yourself.. somehow you have to draw on your ability to reason.. somehow you have to think logically.. somehow you have to actually look at the facts and not what vvatchtower tells you are facts.. our minds are 87 percent visual.. im thinking that 83 percent of the 7 million jws actually believe what they see.. [other jw's affirming the nonsense].
im thinking that eventually 17 percent will actually believe the nonsense that they see.
