When your friends are bad for you: JWs as a case study in the dangers of ingroup bias
by Apognophos inhow do you convince someone to get help when their friends all say they're fine?
from time to time i think about how certain illnesses must be very difficult to treat because the sufferer's actual perceptions are skewed.
for instance, how do you convince someone to seek treatment if they are under a paranoid delusion that they know too much and the establishment wants to put them on drugs to dull their minds?

A few thoughts on the District, um, Regional... sigh....
by Apognophos ini don't even know what the bloody event is called anymore.
i think it's still a district convention until it goes to two days, isn't it?
my convention program leaflet just says "convention of jehovah's witnesses", seemingly intentionally avoiding the change in wording.

Do you have a newfound thirst for self-expression after leaving the religion?
by Apognophos ini'm not even out yet and sometimes i feel like expressing my opinions loudly, wearing t-shirts with messages on them (gasp!
), and getting up in people's faces when they annoy me.
sometimes the thought of a fistfight sounds appealing.

Witnesses: Why The 1/19/14 WT Lesson Is Dangerous
by Apognophos intoday's watchtower lesson touched on the history of hezekiah's reign, and then made a surprising modern-day application.
having used my time before the meeting to research the underlying material instead of highlighting my magazine, i personally found this to be an upsetting study, and decided to put this warning here in the hopes that some active witnesses read it.. the most important thing i want to say to you is that the actual flow of events in this bible account were severely misrepresented, and that there are some disturbing implications in the distortions that were made.
1. hezekiah's father ahaz makes himself a vassal to assyria out of fear of their overwhelming might (2 kings 16:7, 8).. 2. upon becoming king, hezekiah rebels against assyria (2 kings 18:7).

How to Cause a Hardcore JW Brain to Malfunction
by Apognophos ini am leaving it to the reader to decide whether this trick is funny in a cruel way, or potentially beneficial.
it can definitely be used for evil, that is to say, personal amusement.
then again, it could be a kind way to help someone start thinking outside the box.

"How can girls guard against temptation in this sex-crazy world?"
by Apognophos inthis is from the questions from readers in the 12/15/61 watchtower.
i present it unabridged and without comment.
your own comments, however, are welcome.. "when a girl reaches the age of puberty or physical maturity, her body has developed in the matter of sex more than in the mind.

So close, and yet so far away! A lesson in the meaning of "cognitive dissonance".
by Apognophos inthe other week we had a public talk by a brother who surprised me and piqued my interest by describing the origin of religion as resulting from a desire for power, and from fear and superstition.
he was running with the ball so well, but he tripped and landed on his face before he got to the 20 yard line.. i'm not entirely sure what his thought process was.
if i didn't happen to know him, i'd think he was trying to drop a ttatt bomb, but he's way too, well, er, simple-minded to be duplicitous like that.

Comprehensive NWT Comparison Project (calling all technically skilled members)
by Apognophos inis anyone aware if this project is already being done by someone?
if not, perhaps we can brainstorm how to go about this, now that the pdf for the revised nwt is out.
a couple initial impressions:.

My highlights from the AGM
by Apognophos insome of this will not be new to those of you who read other people's notes, but i bet there are a few new bits for you here, so i've provided a user-friendly table of contents, as an homage to the contents that appear before each book of the bible in the new nwt.
i might remember more highlights later, as i'm rather tired right now, but this is what i can recall off the top of my head.. contents (use of quote marks in this section is facetious; these are not actual quotes).
"say, did you notice that 2014 is the 100th anniversary, people?".
