Seems like I have competition - the TV. So no bible reading/discussion today. I don't want to push it or make it seem like I have an agenda, so I let it slide. Maybe tomorrow, after breakfast. From 4PM on, she is pretty much parked in front of the TV. If I come into the room, the first thing she does is turn the volume up. While I don't watch TV, I don't have anything against someone watching a favorite show or two, but watching a repeat of a show you just watched yesterday? I started to think, maybe it was me. I know I don't have the most dynamic personality, but still. She admitted though, that she is addicted to TV. Seems strange to me. Life is so precious, yet she spends 1/3rd of it watching TV?

To late to correct the typo, but I meant 2370 for global flood (they might as well say it happened last week). Thanks for the thoughts, Searcher. I just need to calm down a bit and I think it will be OK. I should be glad that we can at least talk about it.
If anyone has any other 'gems' as we progress thru the WT assigned reading, please feel free to share or point me to previous threads that might be of interest for discussion.

After she came home today from the meeting and we had a big discussion about the need for Christains to meet together. She was very concerned that I would not survive the coming big A. I suggested that we start reading the bible together (just to show her I wasn't uninterested )and try to keep up with the WT schedule. She agreed. today we read first 2 chapters of Genesis (I know we are behind already) but better late than never. Tomorrow 3 and 4. Anyway, I pointed out all the little factoids I have gathered from comments here and from my own personal observations. In the end, she did not agree with everything from the JW (dogma) point of view but said it wasn't really important. I complimented her for at least being open-minded about it, but asked her what would happen if I tried to discuss with an elder my doubts that the first human was created in 4026. BCE.
BTW, just like she did not know the WT said a global flood occured in 2070, she admitted she did not know that they said Adam was created in 4026. She also agreed, that this did not sound reasonable. She really has no idea what they have in print or have printed in the past. We also had big discussion about Deut 18:20-23! We looked at what is said or did not say in the Reasoning book and then read what it said in the bible. She refused to believe that the WT ever said 1914 or 1925 was the end. I have prepared a printout from old mags and books to show her otherwise. Thanks jwfacts.com... I suppose I may need to show her in original publications, so I have already started downloading them.
I don't think it will go anywhere. I just want her to realize that I can't agree to: Listen, be obedient, be blessed (without the thinking part)

I agree with DD's idea. Maybe you can both go swimming together at the local pool. Get him some lessons if he likes it. Swim team is next.

I think KW brings up a valid point about the 'hypnotic' state. It is almost like they want the meetings to be drab and boring. Most of the audience will be semi-conscious and open to the recited drivel. If nothing else, to make them feel guilty for not doing more/givng more. I flat out told my wife that the meetings were extremely boring and that I would be more than happy to attend a service where there was some real discussion. How could talking about God or the bible be boring (even if you don't belive in either)?

Billy, I think the last part of pragraph 8 could use some editing too:
As mature Christian men, they have experience in life. Further, before being appointed, they demonstrated that they had a clear understanding of the Scriptures and that they were qualified to teach what is healthful. (1 Tim. 3:2; Titus 1:9) Their maturity, balance, and Bible-based wisdom enable them to give skillful direction to the flock.
Experience in life - after living in WT cocoon? Clear understanding of the sciptures or current WT dogma? Skillful direction like - don't waste your time getting advanced worldy education. If even half of what was claimed as true about 'undersheperds' in this article was true, the KH would indeed be a spiritual paradise and a place of refuge.

Noah - the Movie
by Simon Morley inwent to the movie theatre over the weekend to take in jack ryan (not bad) and saw the trailer for "noah" (russell crowe and a solid cast) whats the bet the dubs will be given a rule encouraged to examine their own consciences when attending this movie.
from what i hear its fairly true to the genesis account, but hey its hollywood with cgi at their disposal.. .
my guess is they will not be allowed to go until the gb 2.0 attend a screening at loews cineplex, grab some popcorn and pop and give it their blessing..

Trailer looks pretty damn awesome. I will for sure see it some day. I am 10-20 years behind schedule for movies that I would like to see. Just curious, who is Hopkins supposed to be?

OMFG Dinosaurs and Noah
by konceptual99 injust fell off my chair whilst listening to the bible "highlights".
someone has actually just said that the flood account actually helps inform scientists on matters that perplex them.
for example for decades they have wondered how the dinosaurs all disappeared but if they looked at the account of the flood then they would see the answer.

I tend to go with the retelling of the Sumerian story with a bit of hyperbole mixed in. Hey, who doesn't like a good story? And I agree, if you just use land for 'erets' instead of earth it makes the local flood thing more likely. Not that the Sumerian myth is any more believable. But still, an interesting story. The gods were not happy with the noisy humans, so they decided to destroy them. But one of them intervened and gave the Sumerian Noah advance warning. Really interesting to read the Sumerian account.
Of course the WT would have you believe that they are both based on an earlier original account but the Hebrew version is the true version. How can there be an earlier common account if the Sumerian version was produced several centuries before the flood occured (according to the WT in 2370 BCE)?
