I agree. According to the Pew poll, JWs are the least educated among the religions they track.
This is because of undue influence...in particular Information Control.
the title is a bit of click bait.
but here's the alternative title: what stupid beliefs/ideas did you have while an active jw.. i think the majority of jws that don't have obvious mental health issues are not stupid, just un/under-educated.
for example, i now accept evolution as a thing, not a controversy or conjecture.

i don't really engage in doctrinal discussions about jw's anymore.
they seem to say some pretty crazy stuff.
but i have read some threads discussing doctrinal changes and how watchtower is really out of ideas and money at the same time.
I do wonder if rather than declaring the Great Tribulation has began, Watchtower will declare they are in the pre-tribulation period (perhaps the Peace and Security cry) and to begin to make preparations. I could imagine this involving selling all Kingdom Halls and going back to a “book study” arrangement meeting in smaller groups in private homes.
one sentence answers only.. here's mine:.
jws exist because people want an escape from the modern world and are willing to give up intellectual freedom to get it..
Undue influence.
In particular, information control. Lovebombing. Harsh punishment for those who do not agree 100%.
And what Slim Boy Fat said about 1914. Had WWI started in another year, some other Adventist group using the 2520 year calculation would have likely used it to confirm their prediction and the Bible Students would have long faded away and been entirely forgotten.
Of course, whether this group would become a fullblown cult like JWs would require a tyrant like Rutherford to take over.
i was stalking to a jw today about her recent experience on the carts and with being a jw generally.
until this conversation i considered the carts as just an ineffective preaching method and a harmless waste of time.
but now i wonder if the effect of the carts might be to produce noticeable decline in jw numbers.
JWs...in particular pioneers...learn the fine art of "getting time in", that is, in essense, wasting it with nonproductive work.
a few years before i woke up, a young man in my congregation went to ministerial training school.
he began to speak about some of the things he had learned.
one of the things mentioned was that of incubus or succubus, that is to say, sex demons.
Is there an English translation of this?

A few years before I woke up, a young man in my congregation went to Ministerial Training School. He began to speak about some of the things he had learned.
One of the things mentioned was that of incubus or succubus, that is to say, sex demons. He went on to talk about an experience of a lady who lived in an old house. She was tired all the time because her sleep kept getting interrupted. It turned out to be a demon was harassing her while she was sleeping and she kept waking up. When they figured this out, they searched the house from top to bottom and in the attic they found hidden a Ouija board.
This is the sort of stuff that the “Keep Yourself In God’s Love” book instructed JWs not to talk about, otherwise they might draw the demons. However, it seems at MTS school it was discussed overtly.
I’m wondering for those who’ve attended MTS school, what bizarre things they taught that would not be mentioned at ordinary JW meetings?
let the case against the kings’ darren collison play out.
darren collison's lawyer is quoted as saying:.
“this is a warm and loving family, and there is no doubt that they will get past this together,” said portanova, one of sacramento’s highest-profile defense lawyers and one who is not known to speak too glowingly to reporters about the people he represents, except in the occasional case where he actually believes they are innocent.so what happened out there, bill, in the rancher amid the blue oak where the foothills of the sierra just begin to take shape?“it’s really a misunderstanding, and we’re working to straighten it out,” portanova said.
What is surprising is not if alcohol (many JWs drink to excess), but that a JW would be involved in the NBA.
even though, i was raised in a witness home, i never remember hearing that girl scout cookies were a no-no.
and even though i've only been baptized for a few years, i don't remember any specific admonishment of these sweet treats.
but recently at work a jdub coworker made it a point to remind me that jw's do not buy or eat girl scout cookies.
My family, including elders and pioneers, often bought girl scout cookies.
according to the elder's rulebook, there is this addendum in the chapter on the grounds for judicial committee and the section: "misuse of addictive drugs":.
please note: the use of addictive drugs under medical supervision, such as for pain management, would not necessarily require judicial review.
when questions arise, consult with the branch office.. .
I should say my opening post was not a criticism of medications or those who get addicted to strong drugs, often starting out taking them for good medical reasons. It is a problem many have struggled with no matter the religion.
But my intention is discussing how a JW can be apparently can be “in good standing” while addicted to strong drugs, and not subject to a judicial committee.
Of course, the interference of elders in a person’s life can only make the problem worse.
oldskool wrote on another post that "the 'truth' is an experience, and the 'beliefs' are designed to get you to behave as a member of the experience.
" i've read a lot here about the many changes to the wtbts in recent years.
but this got me thinking about the practices or, for the most part, non-practices that make someone a jw.
I believe wind-chimes are now "okay". I remember my parents discussing this growing up. It may be that at one time, they were not.
