Blood family vs. adopted family
by jws inmy wife and i are trying to decide where our children should go in the event of our deaths and have narrowed it down to either my brother and his wife or my wife's sister and her husband.
there are pros and cons for each, but one thing in particular seems important to me.
my wife is adopted.

Passing the time at boring meetings
by jws ini was doing some cleaning this weekend and ran across a drawer with a few of my old calculators, including my very first one.
today they have ones that are credit-card sized that do more.
but i remember getting it when i was about 12 and in 6th or 7th grade and at that time in the late 70's a calculator this size was still sort of a gadget.. for some reason the first thing that bounced into my mind when i pulled it out and looked at it was my old hall at the time.

Sometimes they do something caring...
by jws ini was talking to my dad this weekend and he mentioned that the jws in his congregation and others were planning to rent out a park pavilion and throw a party for a guy to cheer him up because he's been pretty sad after his wife died a few months ago.. first thought was, after hearing all the stories about how cold and heartless the jws can be, here was one example of them seeming to show some genuine concern.. of course, not to let them off the hook entirely, this guy was pretty well known.
i've been away from it for a while and he wasn't part of our hall so i don't remember his resume all that well, but i'm certain he was an elder and i think has at least a couple of sons who are elders and i think he played a big role in helping run conventions.
your average non-ms, non-elder, isn't very likely to get a pavilion full of friends.. i give them credit for showing concern, but there are a lot of people who also need help and fall through the cracks.

Would a JW vote if...
by jws ini know that technically speaking, the wtbs has left voting as a "matter of conscience" in certain articles, but growing up jw, in practice, voting was always strictly forbidden.. with our referendum elections going on in texas, i got to wondering whether they just avoided political elections?
or are all sorts of political voting forbidden, such as on propositions?
for instance, should certain types of taxes be allowed to increase for disabled people?

Update on dad's E-mail blockage...
by jws ina couple of months ago i wrote about my father not getting my e-mails and wondering if i was being sabotaged by his wife.
i had suspected she may be deleting my e-mails and not telling my dad about them.

Virtual Worlds
by jws ingrand theft auto vice city just came out for the pc and i was amazed at how far these virtual worlds have come.
it may not be the biggest city in the world, but i'm amazed at the detail and how you can just sort of go around and interact.
i was thinking how much this reminded me of miami.

Is it Earthlink or shunning?
by jws inbeen having a problem the last several months.
i set up and pay for a monthly earthlink service in his name so that i can e-mail him family updates, pictures of the kids, etc.
he's not exactly computer savy, so it's his wife that actually downloads all the e-mail.
