I can remember having school essays returned to me with red marks through my Americanised spellings and also Watchtoweresque phrases that just don't feature in the outside world. One history lesson I remember being corrected for using the term BCE (before common era) as we are taught to do by the WTS instead of BC (before Christ). Very frustrating!

Watchtower® and their education
by punkofnice inok. i'm a brit as some of you know.. what i noticed with the wbt$ is how they only seem to write from an american cultural standpoint.
not a bad thing if you're one of my cousins form the usa i admit........ but.... here in the uk there are some things that are meaningless to us.. eg hazing.
this was warned about in a study and over here we had no idea what it was and it kind of alienated the congregation from the study.

Problems of Dating the Watchtower Way
by enigma1863 ini wanted to know what problems you have learned about dating in the "truth" acording to there policy.
i feel like you dont really know someone until you live with them.

I know of so many failed marriages between "spiritually strong" JWs, proving that a mutual love of "The Truth" is NOT all that's needed for a successful union. I can remember one particularly disastrous marriage that was annulled within about a week or so. I never found out the gory details other than they realised on their wedding night that a terrible mistake had been made! The mind boggles!!
When you take into account their belief that they are destined to spend forever in the New System with each other, how cruel and irresponsible to marry them off without allowing them to make sure they are thoroughly compatable. Obviously it is far better for them to spend eternity with someone totally unsuitable, who they only married out of desperation for a bit of nookie, than to risk touching each others' naughty bits without a walk down the aisle first!

This thread reminds me of a disturbing talk at a district assembly in the early 1970s. Back then all single JWs were expected to devote all our youthful energies into full time pioneering and were encouraged to "wait until the New System" regarding marriage. We were constantly getting lectures from the platform and in the literature about this because the end was soooooo close!
Anyway, this particular talk actually advised brothers who felt unable to remain single not to waste valuable time on courtships as the only thing that mattered was a mutual love of pioneering and being able to serve Jehovah full time together. Yes, that's right, just marry the first person you meet who is also looking for a marriage mate and you will automatically be compatable with each other!!
I wish I could recall the brother's name who gave that talk. I wonder how many messes up lives he was responsible for!

How often do you see the Witnesses out on the ministry?
by rory-ks ini only ask because i hardly ever see them out on the ministry.
it is a very rare sighting to spot them actively engaged in the house to house ministry.
or out on the street work, in the marketplace, etc.. the other reason i ask is because they are constantly pictured as being on the preaching work.

All the JWs I know seem to prefer the carting work these days for some reason. They set up their carts and portable tables outside train stations between 6.00 and 7.00 am to catch the early commuters, even in the middle of winter when it is freezing cold and still dark!

So, watching a cartoon on TV means that we approve and agree with everything shown in it, however far fetched. Also, because it is a cartoon, it means it is designed for children despite warnings to the contrary, so we should sit and watch it with them then complain bitterly when the content proves to be totally unsuitable for them .
The whole point of ADULT cartoons being shown late at night when the children should be in bed is that it they are designed for ADULTS, and adults who watch cartoons usually have a good sense of humour. After all, a cartoon about a dog that acts like a man and has a higher IQ than its owner is obviously not meant to be taken seriously. The whole point about the sketch of a cocktail drinking dog named Brian dating a woman is because he is actually more of a man of the world than his owner which is a JOKE and has nothing to do with bestiality.
I think there should be additional warnings before the showing of these sort of cartoons that not only are they not suitable for children, but they are also utterly unsuitable for those among us of a religious disposition who have had a complete sense of humour bypass .

Holy spirit handouts, and the magical prayers only the Witnesses get answered.
by msconcerned injehovah, please allow our house to sell so we can go preach in another country where the need is great.. jehovah please help me get that job where i dont have to work shiftwork anymore and i can make all the meetings.. jehovah we need $200 so we can go to the convention, please look after us.. ah yes, the prayers of the faithful one.
how we look at these and feel our hearts swell with love for our god.
many of us at one time or another have asked for things such as these.

One smart - alec reply to questions about the many unanswered prayers of suffering individuals I heard was: well, if Jehovah answered all these prayers and identified himself as the benefactor, everyone would stream into the TRUTH, and the society could not handle the studies, training, expansion needed that this would impose on us. God wants--- God does not want----.
Ah right, so instead of giving everyone in the world the opportunity of salvation (which is what the world wide preaching work is supposed to be about), Jehovah actually doesn't want to make the preaching work TOO successful by lending a hand and answering a few of the worldly prayers, as he is more concerned about imposing too much work on his chosen few and would rather leave the vast majority of poor unfortunate worldlies to their horrible fate at armageddon instead.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry after reading this. I have heard some jaw droppingly outrageous JW reasoning in my time but I think this gets a gold star for sheer eye rolling stupidity!
Don't these people actually stop and THINK about how ridiculous they must sound, or are they really that brainwashed that they just can't see it?!

Good advice from scully! Above all else it is very important that you don't isolate yourself from your TRUE friends, which will hopefully include members of your church who should be on hand to support you. After reading your last post suggesting it is impossible for you to escape your present situation, I think it is extremely important you do not become isolated!
I would suggest joining facebook again using a name that is not obvious to your JW relatives and make it strictly private, so that only people you trust, that you have personally invited and accepted as friends, can be part of it. That way you can at least let people outside your home know what is going on, and seek advice and help from them when it is needed. Even then, if you need to discuss personal matters it is often best to send private messages to individuals rather than open messages that all your facebook friends can read, just to be on the safe side.
Take care and I wish you well

Oh very clever! This is a very well timed article considering we are coming up to the 100th anniversary of the 1914 prophecy and the generation that would "by no means pass away"
Paragraph 11 has just about put the kybosh on a carefully thought out discussion I have been planning to have with my JW family and friends about failed prophecies and the false promises made to us through the pages of the WT during the last century. I was planning to ask them to cast their minds back to the 1960s when we were encouraged to leave school and pioneer because studying for a career would be a waste of time as the end was so close due to the 1914 prophecy. I would go on to ask them honesty how we would have felt back then if someone had told us that in the year 1913 we would still be here in this system, many of us at pension age, the 1914 generation having long since passed away. Back in the 1960s, to even think about the system lasting longer than 1975 would demonstrate a complete lack of faith! I was then going to ask them if they can honestly say now, in light of everything that has happened (or failed to happen) they have never had doubts and wondered why they are continuing to chase that carrot on the end of a stick.
Now, thanks to this cunning article, they will already be mentally primed and ready to reject any such discussion from the outset to protect themselves from "becoming enraged against Jehovah".
I don't think it will be worth even attempting such a discussion now.
I am looking forward to reading blondie's comments on this week's WT study.

JW attitudes to women
by Frazzled UBM ini would be very interested to hear from you ladies on this one.
i know that the society keeps women in subjugation through the headship cr@p but didn't ahve any sense about hoew prehistoric the attitudes are until the other day when we were driving out of the supermarket car park and my wife spotted a woman dressed in tight shorts (it has been very hot here) and she commented 'they say that women who dress like that dserve to be raped'.
i did a wtf and overreacted 'how can you blame the victim like that - such attitudes give men a lciense to commit rape and make women feel they are to balme if they get raped which in turn means that rape doesn't get reported and it gopes on with impunity.

I am laughing so much at Miss Fitt's post as I wonder how that pompous elder would react if he only knew how many wives actually write their husbands' talks for them!
When I was a JW I witnessed this happening, so I am sure it must still go on
