QUALIFIED ELDERS---WHERE ARE THEY?
by minimus inlately, more and more elders are either resigning or being deleted.
a few elders have been known to be "good elders", brothers that really did care about the flock more than the organization.
some that are presently elders are having their own crisis of conscience.most elders that i have come to know are quite simply, not that bright.

I served with some who I thought really did care and were pretty down to earth guys.

Honda vs. Oldsmoble
by Larry inbelieve it or not i've purchased two cars (oldsmobile) through the borg connection - the circuit leasing group.
admittedly both cars were pretty reliable and pretty maintenance free.
the first car i brought from them i had to pick it up at bethel, a brother was driving it up from texas.

Consumer Reports always praises the Accord, and the reliablity of most Honda vehicles is reportedly well above par.
As for Olds, a dead brand name now that GM has announced that they plan to eliminate that line.

Paganism is ok when we say it is
by zenpunk inwe all probably know already that jws don't celebrate christmas, labeling it a pagan holiday and telling its whole sordid history to anyone who'll listen.
however, i found out that wedding rings are pagan in origin.
the jws know it but they include the exchange of rings during the wedding ceremony, explaining that rings are exchanged as an outward symbol to everyone that this couple is married, thus justifying the pagan origin of the whole thing.

Good point zen - for example, in a recent article about the weddings, the Awake! said that rice-throwing was out, and this has been announced at jw weddings, though ostensibly at times because birds evidently consume the rice and suffer ill effects. And yet, yes, wedding rings are seen as a personal choice. I'm not sure of any other examples - maybe that of wedding anniversaries, though I don't think they have any pagan ties.

The Movie "Signs"--Review
by patio34 ini started a new thread because the other one was about going to see it and i just got home from seeing it .
some of the reviews said it didn't answer many of the questions it brought up.
my opinion: au contraire!!

Already one sister said this movie is "demonized". When it was explained to her that it's about aliens, she insisted still that it's "demonized". One more movie for the jw's (at least some of them) to get all hot and bothered about. Move over ET.....

MATERIALISM AND JEHOVAH"S WITNESSES
by minimus init seems that the society has always been concerned with materialism.
at meetings and assemblies, the faithful have been admonished to watch out for the sin of materialism.
if you missed a meeting, could it be because you were being materialistic?
-

Mini - are you reading my mind? I was thinking of starting a thread subject just like this!
Yes, I have heard a few comments over the years implying that so-and so was being materialistic just because they bought something nice or bought a home or a car.
Then there was one sister who used to practically inventory my home every time she came over. We actually had to stop inviting her and her family because we got tired of the comments. We live in a row home and live a simple life, and I found it hard to believe that such comments were made.
This is a classic area in which jws show their true feelings toward their 'brothers' in that they are quick to assign ulterior motives to those whom they claim to love so dearly.

In between days, I agree that the factors you mention play a part, and pistoff, yes, you added some interesting and true points too.
In the cases I mentioned, all, from what I had heard, were due to fornication. No surprise there I guess. Young ones have a tough enough time meeting the high standards, and the constant demands of the jw religion just add to the pressure. Being told that they can't do this, and can't do that, as mentioned by pistoff, surely contribute to their frustration. Add to that the fact that when they do something wrong, it's announced to a Hall full of people.
