Quote from Manal al-Sharif
by FayeDunaway inmanal al-sharif is a saudi arabian former extremist muslim who was liberalized by the internet and became a women's rights activist in her country.
reading this quote i was struck that her experience is similar to a jehovahs witness experience, including mine, and gives me hope that many more people who are brought up in extremist environments will wake up, no matter what their backgrounds.
the internet is a fabulous thing.

I think believers, particularly those in extremist systems, come to a cross-roads sooner or later. They must decide to accept reality as truth or continue believing lies and myth as truth. In other words, they all must decide at some point to be intellectually honest with themselves or continue lying to themselves. I know as I had to make this decision. -

Jesus Worshipped a Moral Monster
by cofty init has become very common for christians to try to disavow the disgusting ethics of the god of the old testament.. this is a dishonest venture.. the capricious, vengeful deity of israel was "the god and father of our lord jesus christ".. putting aside the damaging things he said and did himself, jesus comes with some worrying history.. gentle jesus meek and mild is inseparable from baby-murdering soldiers of jah.

It wasn't until Jesus showed up that hell was introduced. You MUST be born again or you risk, upon death, being judged and if found unacceptable, tortured for all eternity in a burning lake of fire. I suspect this may have been because Christianity wasn't getting the converts they had hoped for. And one of Jesus' goals is outlined in:
Matthew 10:35: "For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." -- NIV.
Yeah, what a swell guy.

"High" education
by Esmeralda001 indid any of you guys disregard the wt recommendations and pursue a career.
if you answer "yes": was your journey easy?
are you happy with the end result?
-
Heaven
Yes, I went to College and pursued a career. I'm not sure how to answer your 'was it easy' question. I am fairly intelligent and was able to pass with high honours and acquire work afterwards. I have worked hard but I would never recommend NOT pursuing higher education and a career or one's dream. I can't imagine not working.
Even when I retire, I figure I'll be working at something. I would say that I recommend one remain flexible and adaptive as change is THE one constant in life. The role I perform now at the company I work for is not the role I was hired to do. And I am sure I will have to take on a different role in the near future.
When my bro and I were planning our education after high school, our Mom tried to dissuade us from going citing we would not need careers due to Armageddon's imminence (this was 7-8 years after 1975). Neither one of us listened to her.
I can tell you this. I would have regretted not going to College. That is 100% for sure.

Closest to the truth?
by punkofnice ini know many jws that state that the watchtower corporation is the 'closest to the truth'.
thus they quiet their cognitive dissonance.. i don't have access to a corporation library any more.
is this a stance that the watchtower corporation has actually claimed?.

clambake said: I have always found it funny that average JW feels this superiority to the average Christian because they believe they have figure out all the prophetic books of the bible but in no way shape or form could they even start to explain the bamboozle.
I have Catholic friends and acquaintances that do exactly the same thing. They base their superiority on the fact that theirs is the original Christian religion.

Why do people just give their money to the Watchtower?
by WireRider inwhat do they contribute to humanity?
what do they contribute to any part of society?.
why are people paying for a scam?.
-
Heaven
I am not sure about earlier years but I am positive, as my parents aged and became ill that they gave their money to the cult due to the guilt in not being able to witness any longer.
I was standing there when my Father with his head hung down, stated to one of the elders that he, my Father, was not a good person. The elder told him he should not think that way (this elder and his wife are not bad people, just mislead like many others). I did not react externally but I was angry inside. This religion hurts people.

How much of a " free-spirit" are you?
by The Rebel ini think every one wants to be a " free- spirit", but what does that really mean?.
i ask the question because :-.
a) i decided i would not give the religiouse organisation i belonged to the power to force me to rebel within its organisation, when the " free-spirit" inside me no longer wanted to be controlled by this religion.. b) i now realise the " free-spirit" within me that demanded independence from w.t control has also come with great consequences, which has now made the price of my liberation seem shallow.. anyway i am not well educated, but i do now appreciate the psychological and emotional consequences my actions have had on my family, and friends.

Freedom means you have the right to choose. As a JW you don't have that right.
I chose to be intellectually honest with myself and others. I had to go through a lot of examination of the beliefs I was raised upon versus facts and reality. When reality does not match the myth, one has a choice - either accept reality or continue to lie about myth being truth.
I chose not to lie. I put my own life plan together and executed it. This is why I could never be a Jehovah's Witness. I never got baptized. As a JW you must tell lies as truth and you must accept their plan as your plan for life. If you do this, you will never be happy. Accepting someone else's plan as your own will likely not work. Choosing how you go about your own journey should be entirely up to you.
As part of my journey, I tried to show unconditional love to my JW parents. It was difficult at times but ultimately worth it. I chose to be an example of a 'worldly' person who was not evil. Even though my parents were mean-spirited towards me on more than one occasion and constantly attempted to convert me, I stood my ground, pointing out the logical issues with what they were presenting. I tried to remain kind and emotionally calm when they would get snarky and angry.
As he got older, my Father told me he would rather have my help than the help of his spiritual family because I am supportive. He is no longer able to witness. His dementia prevents him from being able to construct complete thoughts and sentences. But I always tell him I love him. Even when he is sleeping, he smiles when he hears my voice because I have shown him love throughout the years.
The best advise I can give anyone about this religion is .... NEVER get baptized. Once you do this and discover later it isn't what you thought, you are in for a heap of hurt. Remain emotionally calm when your family is getting upset with you. This takes practice but it can be done. I would ask logical questions that they were not able to answer because they knew the correct answers contradicted their beliefs. I always tried to give them something to think about even if it angered them.
If you do not follow your 'free-spirit' you will always be enslaved. You will always live in a cage.

"Most women would prefer to be stay at home housewives. Women's lib did alot of damage to women!"
by purrpurr inthe above is a quote from a jw female relative.
this was in response to a discussion about the suffragette movement ( and the movie about it that's currently in cinemas).
she seemed to think that it would be so much better if women were just daughters/ wives/ mothers and didn't go out to work and have career's?
