I Need A Good Tearburst - Have Not Wept For Many Months.
by hillary_step ini have always been a sucker for a good soppy love song, .
last night i was wading through my huge vinyl collection, pulled an album long-not heard and spun this track on the rack.
though penned almost forty years ago, i have to say, it is still a very handsome song indeed.. coming back to me.

Coincidences....
by hillary_step ini love a good coincidence.
it is the closest i get to the supernatural these days.
how about this one.. a couple of days ago i was working from my home office and while doing so was listening to a bbc radio 7 re-run of the 1960's radio comedy, "i am sorry i will read that again", with john cleese etc.

Why Religion?
by hillary_step ini have no issue with a person having a spiritual dimension, but i wonder why people have difficulty accepting that the religion that an individual makes up inside their head is no more or less worthy than the ones other people have made up in their heads.. why do people feel the need to have others tell them what to believe and how to think?
simplistic though this may sound, this is at the basis of all religion.
does religion scratch the itch of our insecurities?.

Poor Losers?
by hillary_step inwell, the major record industry has shown its complete impotence in the face of rapidly changing musical technology and are now in court asserting that buying a cd and copying it to your own pc for personal use is an indictable offense and one which they will prosecute.. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/28/ar2007122800693.html?hpid=topnews.
it is no secret that the major record labels are crumbling before our eyes.
employees are being laid off in their thousands, shareholders are squealing like petulant piglets and their human commodities, the musicians are sitting on the sidelines wide-eyed.. i have never been an exponent of illegal downloading of music, though its inevitability should by now have produced some remodelling to the record companies business plan.

TurnThat Music Down Boy.....
by hillary_step inany audiophiles on the board will have noticed how in recent years one has to turn music up past its comfortable level to get a decent balance of sound.. do not feel that this is your imagination, it is not.
it is by design and designed to suit the ears of young people who think that loud sound is better sound.. http://funl.blogspot.com/2007/06/loudness-war.html.
this link provides a simple explanation of what happens at the mixing and mastering stage of much modern music production.

Self Deceit and Faith.
by hillary_step inthis thread is inspired by a comment made on another thread, but i thought it would make an interesting discussion.. self deceit is described as a "misconception that is favorable to the person who holds it".
my premise is that faith is a form of self-deceit - lying to oneself.. so, i would ask of the "faithful" the following questions and would request that they be read carefully to ensure no that there is no misunderstanding of purpose.. 1) in what way is faith not self-deception?.
2) is a person who has faith in a god that you do not believe in, say for example siva, practicing a form of self-deception?.

Another One For Jazzers - Solos That Defy Criticism
by hillary_step inwell, i suppose one criticism is allowed and that is that the video and sound are slightly out of synchronism, but just listen to this tenor saxophone solo by the great george adams.
it will raise the hair on your neck.. his tone is almost like a soprano saxophone.
i have no idea how he adjusts his reed to do this, but it is quite incredible.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gktefrmqxws.

Frank Zappa on the coming 'Fascist Theocracy'. (1986)
by hillary_step inapart from the comic value of this interview in which frank zappa presents his views on censorship, i found it interesting that he was mocked for suggesting that the us was set on a course that was leading to a 'fascist theocracy'.
this was recorded in 1986 so the quality is a little ragged, but the spirit shows through!.
