Where would we be now if there was never a concept of God?

if (for the sake of argument for those who believe in god) there was no god, and no human being who ever lived had ever come up with or even had a concept of god or a higher being.

where do you think we as human beings would be today.

what do you think our history would be like, and our future?

Well I'm not sure exactly, but I'm pretty sure there would have never been a holocaust, or nine eleven, or salem witch hunts.

Black slavery would probably have not happened, because nobody would have thought they were cursed. In fact most predudist would not exist. For example when I believed in god I hated homosexuals, that died the moment I became an atheist.

We may even be farther scientifically since there wouldn't have been censorship by the church, and there would probably be no objections to cloning or stem cell research. And stuff like that.

Rulers would not remain rulers if they were incompitent, because nobody would claim they have the 'divine right to rule' or that they had gods backing. There would be no holy wars of any kind.

So... what has religion done to help mankind??? I dunno.

i know we were sold a lie in believing god was only dealing with the wt and to obey them is to obey god.

what puzzels me is that in rejecting the wt so many also reject their belief in god.

surely they believed that god existed as witnesses.

Well obviously I don't speak for all atheists but I simply stopped believing in god as I got older, I believed in him when I was nine... as most nine year olds believe in santa.

I didn't really think about it untill I was 14, I just didn't have any reason to. And then, I'm not sure why, I think I learned something in school that didn't jive with the flood story... So I did a bunch of research, starting with the borgs stuff, and I wasn't satisfied with their super vauge answers. So I looked it up on the INTERNET and realised that it was completely obsurd to believe in the flood, without believing in evolution (Ironicaly the animals would have to evolve WAY faster than scientists think they did in order to make the story work.)

I was shocked, but I liked what I learned. So every week during our bible reading I would look for something that I wanted to check the next time I had the chance, and pretty much every time I checked, the bible was wrong, or at least neaded a heck of a lot of explaining to make it believable.

And then there were the little things that just didn't make sense, like: How did the apostles know what Jesus prayed about when they were all sleeping? What the heck is up with the talking donkey... didn't that warrant an explanation of some kind? Why did god nead to confuse the laungages unless he felt threatened? (Which is just what the bible says...) Why did god ALWAYS punish other people for someones mistakes? Like David multiple times, Akan, Pharaoh, Adams decendants, etc. There's a pile of things that are unexplained and off the wall.

By the time I was 15, I was completely convinced that the bible was balogney... Then I researched evolution and found out that it makes WAY more sense then the society let on. And as it turns out, there a perfectly acceptable scientific explanation for darn near everything!

And since I have never seen any reason to believe in any kind of god at all, I simply don't believe in god. Now that I'm 17 I'm officialy and atheist.

So I'm not an atheist by default, (Even though I was technicaly born that way.) It took a long time and a LOT of learning and research.

I definately reccomend that everyone look at this site... even if for no other reason that to see how atheists think... Because we definately have a different thought pattern than most people: (Well I do anyway.)

How old are these talk outlines?

He talked about things like the wonderfull organization of the universe. (He didn't even mention the fact that stars, solar systems, and entire galaxies regularly slam into each other, or implode in on themselves forming super distructive black holes.)

He said the the universe is infinitely large... but then went on to explain how many galaxies there are, which would be impossible if the universe really WERE infinate...

And the animal life. (Once again, he said about how a mother bird takes care of her eggs... but didn't mention how the tarantula sneaks in and eats the babies while the mother is away getting food. Or diseases, or cannibal monkeys.)

And he said that the life sustaining water, only exists on earth... WTH!?

It has been proven to exist on the moon, Mars, Mercury, Neptune, several other moons, gas clouds. And is believe to exist on pluto, along with a bunch of those other little planets on the edge of our solar system. Heck lots of comets are made of ICE, so if they hit a planet, Ta Da, that planet now has water on it.

He said that the worlds fastest supercomputer is less that one billionth the ability of a HOUSE FLY... I'm quite certain I heard that EXACT SAME statement years ago! Have computers not progressed at all since then?

Does anyone here happen to know how old some of these talk outlines really are?

(Or better yet, does anyone know of website that contains the outlines?)

Anyways... What special knowledge does your aunt have that your mother or even the GB doesn't know about? After 1995s generation thing, there is no reason for them to believe that Harmageddon will come before the year 2500 aside from their own impatience and wishfull thinking. (Wishing her relatives and neighbors would hurry up and get eaten by gods birds so she can take their houses.)

it was the 14th of april last year that i had to sit my mother down and tell her i was an apostate.. i was closer to her than anyone else.

my father and mother are still married, but he let her raise me as a witness, and that meant it was me and mom.. me and mom in field service for 100 hours in july because she had to make her time as a regular pioneer.. me and mom fighting over what to bring for lunch to the district convention.. me and mom up late at night, when she would berate me, and then unload all her problems on to me.. me and mom and our 4 hour family studies, where we discuss 2 paragraphs of a random book, and then she would browbeat me until early in the morning.. somehow, through all that, i pretended to be a witness for years, just to appease her.

looking back, i don't know if i loved her, or if i was just afraid of her.

HOLY CRAP... I never thought of it before, but my entire relationship with my mother is based on us being dubs... We haven't gone to the beach in years due to the JW budget, our family night consists of just movies and the watchtower, and other than that we hardly talk!

When I leave we will have absolutely NOTHING in common! And I somehow never even thought of that before.

I'm sorry Richie, the whole situation sucks. I can't really say that I hope you and your mom get things straightened out, because I think your life will progress much better without her... But it still sucks.

Didn't perk the coffee right?

I've made a LOT of coffee, and I wasn't aware that was something you could screw up.

Anyways, I wasn't offended by this poem since I am perfectly capable of doing all those things myself. And I'm certainly not so pathetic as to complain when someone offers to do my work for me.

But that being said, I have no intention of getting married, since I find women to be more trouble than they're worth. Especialy if they can't even make coffee without... I dunno, burning it?

And if a woman can do everything by herself than I think men are more trouble than they're worth too. Marriage just sucks, period. "."

i think it's a deserving act of love to make the sacrifice to rejoin a cult in order to stay connected to your family.

it's putting your love of your family over so so many things.

Cool! That was pretty impressive, I hope I sound that convincing, and still innoffensive when I get the chance. And of course keep us posted...

So I wonder what they'll come up with... They don't really have much information on how to prove god exists. They might just go home, find out they can't find anything convincing, and forget about it... that would suck, I hope they go back.

i was just wondering just because the wts have made a mess of things and have done things that are questionable.

PLEASE, do yourself a favor, and don't ignore the possibility that god does not exist. If you decide that he does exist, that's totally up to you, and I understand perfectly. But don't brush it off simply because you don't like the alternative.

I'm an atheist and, contrary to popular theistic opinion, I'm perfectly happy with that. It means that I don't have to wonder if I have the whole truth or not. (Meaning I don't have the whole truth, but nobody/nothing is going to burn me for all eternity for it.) And for me, the truth is always getting more and more clear, every time a scientist discovers something new, my knowledge about the universe makes more sense.

However, I do understand what it's like to think you'll live forever, and I can't offer you anything like that. But maybe the bible can't either...
