She thanked Jehovah. I asked her if she really believed that Jehovah was
truly responsible for my happening to have her keys with me. She thought about it and thanked me instead.
Good for mom!
Just a thought: the title of this thread indicates not just praising God, but belief that there was divine intent at work, and that may be the real issue.
Sometimes when something goes my way I spontaneously say, "Thank you, Lord Jesus!" or "Thank God!" If you asked me, however, do I really believe that God or Jesus actually caused the 4 ball to go in the corner pocket, or caught my attention just before I burned the broccoli, or arranged for me to have the $1.50 to pay for parking, I would have to say, "Absolutely not. Otherwise, what message am I to glean from the times that these things didn't happen?" -

Love? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Love! (8/15 WT)
by metatron inthe latest watchtower magazine asks "are we living in the "last days"?.
now, given that the "last days" are supposed to be a time of .
suffering, horror and death, it might be refreshing to find a source of real love and kindness in the world.

Love - and Jesus Christ - are the WTS' major "afterthoughts."
So true, willy. Both preclude the need for a world-wide publishing and distribution organization, so both are highly expendable commodities.

Belief in purple dancing unicorns is often compared to belief in God. Is the comparison fair? No. In large measure due to the fact that such a huge segment of human society believes in God whereas only a tiny precentage believes in purple dancing unicorns. Both beliefs are due respect, however, simply because they are held by someone who is deserving of respect. A belief that is more popular is deserving of more respect. Respect does not equate to an evaluation of validity or value, so trying to use the expressions "respect as equals" and "deserving of respect" as synonymous is off the mark as far as my intent is concerned.
Well, I think you lost a lot of constituents with that leap of logic! Are you kidding? By that reasoning, the more people who believe a falsehood, the more likely that it is actually true. Huh? Are you watering down the concept of respect? We should respect an opinion just.......because? What ever happened to respecting an opinion because it had merit as a logical premise?
Belief in purple dancing unicorns is often compared to belief in God. Is the comparison fair?
And what do the two have in common as regards logic? Lack of empirical evidence. Otherwise the two are equally valid. Gawd, Auld! I can't believe that you left this opening - you could drive a truck through it!

Not to get in between two master debaters here, but I would like to say that in spite of all the chivalry displayed on behalf of Annie, she seems cheerfully undaunted by anyone's comments. Good for her - she's obviously a big girl who knows her own mind and can take what is dished out. I still don't see where anyone insulted her personally, so the oft-used word "ridicule" seems a bit over the top.
As a four-month lurker here, Annie had to know that crediting Jah with answering her prayer was a provocative stance to take, and it has resulted in a very interesting exchange. And this is a discussion board, not a warm bubble bath. I'm not totally sure how to feel about being lectured to about how to treat 'newbies' - did I miss a memo? - aren't they included in the Posting Guidelines - which do not seem to have been violated in this thread?

Lost:
We do understand and are pulling for you. What a tough spot to be in! But it is a common story around here. At some point the balance will shift and you will know what you have to do. The tipping point becomes - it is less comfortable playing hide and seek and more comfortable to come clean about your feelings.
Till then, we are here for you. (And after, too!)

Kewl thread! I've been up since about 4 am - just couldn't sleep. This board apparently never sleeps, but it does seem to slow down in the afternoon, Pacific Standard Time. I wonder if that is because the Britishers are asleep then?

A JW kid that I knew is now in the insane assylum
by headmath ini just can't believe all the trouble witness kida are having lately in my area( (vancouver b.c).
3 years ago a witness kid (18 years old) jumped off a bridge to his death.. the latest news from the jw grapevine is that a jw kid that i knew (he is now 20) is in the insane assylum.
it seems he was found swimming towards bethel from vancouver (he left a note) this was at least a 1000 miles away and he never would have made it.

I have to agree with the points that Inquistor is making.
Certainly being a JW leads many to depression. However, the scenario you describe of the young man swimming to Bethel and believing himself to be God sounds very much like bi-polar disorder. B-P and schizophrenia usually have onset in early twenties, so this would fit. I believe these illnesses are of organic origin.

Has anyone ever asked you to help them do something illegal?
by Scully ini got a weird call from a work mate last night.
she's going through hell for the past year or so with her soon-to-be ex, who had been carrying on an affair and stopped sharing their family expenses.
long story short, he's out of the house now and has left her and their kids out in the country without any transportation.

Many years ago a French-Morrocan 'friend' I had once dated tried to coerce me to carry some 'papers' through Heathrow (we were in California) and then on to a foreign embassy.
I flat refused though he was extremely persistant. Upshot was, a few months later a young woman from here (Santa Barbara) was arrested at Heathrow carrying a suitcase full of to-be-assembled guns. She claimed innocence and fingered - yes, you guessed it - Mr. SmoothBallz. She did jail time in London. After 9/11 our local newspaper did a follow-up (20+ years later) and this poor woman had had a tough time putting her life back together. I felt bad that I never stepped forward with what I knew, because I knew she was innocent, but my (then) husband forbade me to.
Think of the worst case scenario - and ask yourself if it is worth it.
