whilst at london bethel, i witnessed this first hand.
i know that it went on there.
those from brooklyn bethel (i understand that there are a few ex brooklyn bethelites here), the question i have for you is 'did you witness/hear of any over your side of the pond?
Yes there was. My first day at Brooklyn Bethel I meet another guy, which was also his first day, from the NYC area. A number of months later he and a number of others were gone for gay activities. That was March of '75--those that remember Knorr's lecture that morning...well...it was quite memorable....
There were other times that guys were dismissed for gay activities and a number of guys I knew that left and heard later that they came out.
does anyone remember the incident that happened back in the summer of 1974 at what was called the "squibb" building at bethel where a pipe bomb detonated at one of the doors just under the bridge that spanned the complex across columbia heights?
i was at bethel at the time and i even have a picture of two nypd cops standing in front of the scene the day after (if i can only find the picture).
i was thinking of posting it on this forum but i don't know how.
I remember that. Actually heard the thing explode. I was like wtf was that? Knew it was not a car backfiring and pretty sure it was not a gun...hand gun. Found out later that day it was a pipe bomb. As stated there was an article in the newspaper, I remember sending it to my family. Do not remember if there was any conclusion to the investigation.
On a side note that building had another incident of note. One morning as the workers arrive and open the windows there was a dead body behind building/alley way. Mob style execution.

When I was at Bethel a number of guys I knew and worked with were college grads before coming jw's. They all wound up with the better technical/skilled jobs. It was an observation not lost on the rest of us who skipped college back then.
at the portland maine district convention that was held this past weekend, brother buck from brooklyn bethel gave the last talk on sunday.
in this talk he mentioned the "millions of people that have left" in the recent past.
he also mentioned them in the concluding prayer.

Sam Buck?? I am surprised he is alive yet. When I went to bethel in 70's he was my entrants school instructor and table head for awhile. Remember going to his room to see vacation slides which was a dry run for an Awake article that appeared shortly after. From a few things I recall he wasnt one to sugarcoat the realities of life.

I remember being shown several typed pages of groups/albums that didn't meet approval by a sister I was dating at the time. I laughed. A lot of the albums listed I had and roomates had while we were at Bethel years earlier. Especially all the Led Zepplin albums.
well, the guy hasn't contributed to awake for some years, but from what i understand, he died recently, and his wife too!
he had been in charge of awake!

I briefly lived next door to Harry and his wife while at Bethel. For the most part a nice couple. If I recall, Harry was in the Navy during WWII. He was on one of the first ships that had radar. One night they spotted a Japanese convey, the first salvo was a direct hit. One of his other neighbors used to play their stereo to loud, evil rock music, and the excessive bass would set him off. Apparent flashbacks to those big guns from the ship he served on.

i would laugh my ass off and slam the door in their face.

very few couples got divorced, even after they were caught with another person.i know that most that got df'd for straying still didn't get divorced----they tried to work it out.
have you seen this too?
I've known a number of couples in various congregations that should not be married, they should get divorced and move on. But they will not so they remain miserable and struggle to put on a front. When I was at Bethel I knew 3 couples that got divorced, two of these, husband of couple X ran off with wife of couple Y. At the table across from me there was a recently married couple. One morning at breakfast i noticed that one eye was a lot darker than the other eye--the husband was known to be a bit short tempered.
mine was when my mom signed me up to sit at a table at our local university.
we had to sit there and talk to students as they passed by our table.
a few people came up to start a conversation and i didn't even know what they were talking about.
I know of a similiar story where a guy(jw) got picked on in school quite a bit. He was not small or weak but a turn the cheek kind of brother until one day he had enough. By the time he was done kicking his tormentors ass he left the school via ambulance with a broken arm, numerous broken ribs and a fractured skull.
