Wasn't Saddam ousted for doing precisely this sort of thing?

    Simon,

Slow pitch, easy to field, the OFFICIAL investigation has been going on since at least January 19th. It's only now that the MEDIA go wind of this.

    Realist,

I can't disprove SOME of what you say...You can't PROVE what you say at all.

An interesting tidbit from this evening's edition of The (must-read) Nelson Report ...

We can contribute a second hand anecdote to newspaper stories on rising concern, last year, from Secretary of State Powell and Deputy Secretary Armitage about Administration attitudes and the risks they might entail: according to eye witnesses to debate at the highest levels of the Administration...the highest levels...whenever Powell or Armitage sought to question prisoner treatment issues, they were forced to endure what our source characterizes as "around the table, coarse, vulgar, frat-boy bully remarks about what these tough guys would do if THEY ever got their hands on prisoners...."

-- let's be clear: our source is not alleging "orders" from the White House. Our source is pointing out that, as we said in the Summary, a fish rots from its head. The atmosphere created by Rumsfeld's controversial decisions was apparently aided and abetted by his colleagues in their callous disregard for the implications of the then-developing situation, and by their ridicule of the only combat veterans at the top of this Administration.

Tough guys ... -- Josh Marshall

WHOSE GOING TO APOGIZE AND DO 20 YEARS OF HARD LABOR FOR SEPTEMBER 11?

Someone should, and maybe they will. But the thing is, there were no Iraqis involved in 911. The hijackers were mostly Saudi Arabians, and four other mideast countries, but absolutely no Iraqis. The head of AlQueda is Osama Bin Laden and he is a Saudi Arabian. Although I don't approve of revenge, because I think it leads to escalating violence that hurts a lot innocent people, I do understand the desire for it, and I have a strong revengeful streak myself. But I don't see the point at all of aiming the revenge at the Iraqis when they actually had nothing to do with 911. If we were going to invade somebody based on 911, it should have been Saudi Arabia. Although many of us would like to see the hijackers and their backers brought to severe justice, the torture of Iraqi prisoners has not achieved that, and could not ever achieve that, even indirectly, because Iraq was not responsible for 911 in any way. It is frustrating and infuriating that we have not been able to find and punish those responsible (although those directly responsible are dead) but the frustration and rage do not justify the torture of prisoners.

Just to follow up some of my previous concerns about the responsibilty of some of the private firms in Iraq and how accountable they are.

IMO, these companies have a vested interest in making and keeping things unstable - more work for them. The comeback for their actions though is on the official American forces there.

    yeru,

i cannot prove that the US is building mini nukes? that they killed millions of people in carpet bombings all around the world? that they whiped out the indians? that they had a civil war because part of the country dared to declare independance? that bush is not signing any international treaty that would put restrictios on US economy or military? that the US is trying to remove any foreign leader in 3rd world countries who is not in line with them? that embargos enforced by the US killed hundreds of thousands of people and ruined the lives of many more without having any effect on the leaderships...and the list goes on and on!

you really dare to say i cannot prove that?! HAHAHA!

Hmmnn ... that's over 3 months and nothing happened to the people concerned before the photo's were published by the media? They seemed to be able to act promptly when it becomes an embarrassment but not when the Red Cross are repeatedly highlighting it for instance.

I also want to know who knew about it, where up the chain of command did it go, and who's head rolls for it because someone's should.
