Ghosts?

I've never had any sort of experience with ghosts etc. but several family members and friends (past and present) say they have had "strange things happen" or "seen 'something'". Of course I can't say they really haven't but I'm skeptical. Even if I were to see something, I'd STILL be skeptical of the majority of claims I've heard. People just are too willing to categorize something they're not sure of as supernatural.

My grandmother (mother's side) who died long before I was born, was told by a spiritist when she was young that she "had the gift" to communicate with spirits. This happened in a little town in Louisiana called Transylvania (it really does exist) - I just love that part of the story!
Anyways, after some time of trying to communicate with spirits she apparently began to have success at making tables 'talk' or rise and tap out messages etc. One day, one of their neighbors who doubted my grandmother's ability came over and wanted to sit on one end of the table while she made the table talk from the other end. Now I've always heard that this was a very heavy oak table, my grandmother was not very big and the neighbor weighed close to 300 lbs. The neighbor sat on the table, my grandmother put her hands on the table, the table rose, the neighbor bolted out the door never to step foot back in that house and my grandmother gave up her practices not long after - deciding that her gift was not from god.

I have never seen any ghosts. I ain't troubled by them. What you don't believe in doesn't hurt you.

The one thing I don't like here and that keeps me from being open is the heavy sarcasm. But, people are entitled to their own opinion. It's just when others bash someone elses opinion calling it stupid and irrelavant because they have different views or because there is no scientific explanation. As if human intelligence is as high and far as life goes in our small nook in this whole universe.

As far as what elsewhere said:

You saw a ghost standing/floating right there in front of you?

For longer than an instant? Not just something that you saw in the corner of your eye and was then gone? More than just an "odd" shadow in the corner of your room? Not just a sound or movement that you could not immediately explain?

It was just THERE for an extended period of time and clearly acting as an intelligent entity?

My own personal answer to that is yes. I'm not trying to convince anyone else of my own experience. One that I didn't even want to have. But the fact is, it happened to me and no one can ever convince me otherwise. What I saw was there more than an instant and had enough intelligence to interact with me and respond accordingly to my reactions. The only difference was that I was in the flesh and "she" was not. I don't know who or what it was. And I'm not trying to sit here and say it was a ghost or spirit because I don't know what it was to be honest.

I don't drink or smoke. No drugs. But if I walk up to a person and have a conversation, nobody can tell me it never happened. The same with standing face to face with whatever it was.

That's just my opinion. And I'm stickin' to it.

    NIckey,

because there is no scientific explanation

Actually, there are very good scientific and psychological explanations for so called "strange occurances" and "ghosts." www.skepdic.com

    But the fact is,

    Fact?

it happened to me and no one can ever convince me otherwise.

Well, I see any critical thinking stops now, doesn't it? The fact of the matter is that extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence and all I see in your story is total heresay. What you saw might have been a trick your own mind played on you -- a biochemical abnormality or simply wishful thinking. Stories like yours have been debunked time and time again. Good luck.

    logan,

Like I stated, it is my opinion. Nothing will change it. What you say is true... HOWEVER, just like in mathematical equation... there are always various sums to come up with the same answer. Therefore I can be just as right as you are. If you wanna get scientific with it.

    Just because 2 + 2 = 4 doesn't mean 1 + 3 doesn't equal the same answer.

I'm very open minded and a critical thinker. Just because I disagree with you doesn't make me any less.

My opinion still stands and I respect yours as well.

    Nickey,

Sounds like you are committing the logical fallacy of the Undistributed Middle:

    http://www.infidels.org/news/atheism/logic.html#isatype

Fallacy of the Undistributed Middle / "A is based on B" fallacies / "...is a type of..." fallacies

These fallacies occur if you attempt to argue that things are in some way similar, but you don't actually specify in what way they are similar. Examples:

"Isn't history based upon faith? If so, then isn't the Bible also a form of history?"

"Islam is based on faith, Christianity is based on faith, so isn't Islam a form of Christianity?"

"Cats are a form of animal based on carbon chemistry, dogs are a form of animal based on carbon chemistry, so aren't dogs a form of cat?"

You see, you have not demonstrated how scientific theories and arguments from ignorance are like different mathematical equations. This is fuzzy thinking. So, yes, your opinion still stands (as all opinions are wont to do), but it has been shown to be an uninformed opinion.

I have had a couple of encounters with spirits, not that I saw them but I felt them. I had one experience when I was still a JW, I was in bed and was just about to fall asleep when I all of a sudden felt a presence, then something just started to pull the blankets off to the side of my bed. I was so freaked out I could not move. I tried to yell "Jehovah" but it wouldn't come out so I started praying in my head and all of a sudden it stopped. That was just one incident, I have had a couple of other.

I also had a premonition that came true, so I definitely believe in spirits.

    sxybrwneyes,

This has also happened to me on several occasions and it is quite terrifying! There is a bilogical explanation for this phenomenon. Look up "night terrors" on the Internet. It's quite common.
