It's interesting that all the scriptures that speak of eternal life in the present tense are from john. It was the last or 2nd last book written. It has been described as having gnostic undertones, and the gnostics called it their own.
I hasten to point out, though, that the quotation from Romans 8:23-5 also speaks of salvation in the past tense, as an accomplished fact. There are other such statements in Paul's writings, too, I just can't think of them right now, and I'm too busy right now to stop and look them up.
