I like the quote from The Invention of Lying where the main character is trying to explain the concept of "The Man in the Sky" to the people of the town. One of the confused town's people says, "So... he's a good guy? But he's also kind of a prick?"
But yeah, trying to excuse the inexcusable. Pretty much sums it up. These things are inexcusable and unforgivable! Inexcusable for any person or any god. It pains and worries me to see people try to defend these things. Divine Command Theory in full effect!
I can't help but think that, if any of them had been personally sexually abused or raped themselves, how even the idea of having to spend the rest of their lives bound to their abuser, having to suffer more of that sexual abuse every day (under the command of God's law), would fill them with utter horror and revulsion. It's the stuff nightmares are made of and it would be enough to drive a woman to suicide for sure. But oh wait... that's a sin too. I guess she's stuck with being her rapist's plaything for the rest of her miserable life.
