Sometimes, I wonder why God made men!

I think Deuteronomy explains it pretty well. If he hadn't made us who else would rape the women and then marry them?

Forgive me if I am repeating anything here, but I think we have to go way back, back to the beginning of the Bible as the original post was based on the bible:

Genesis 3:12 (NIV)...The man said, "The woman you put here with me-she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it"

So right off, the guy is wimping out about his guilt in all of it. He knew better, he was there longer etc. (In other words it's her fault)

Punishments were meted out and here it is for women:

Genesis 3:16 (NIV)...To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing ; with pain you will give birth to children.

Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you "

So every society that has existed has pretty much kept this attitude in tact. The Patriarchal rule over daughters and wives. The attitudes about rape, pornography, cheating, etc. Every society has a word for girlfriends outside of a marriage and it is generally winked at by men.

When a woman is exposed they become a dirty word. Whores or prostitutes in English, there are descriptions in every language, but not for the man.

In general, I don't think attitudes have changed much at all, despite our advances.

Please note I said in GENERAL. This does not include all men.

    bohm

Quietlyleaving: property laws of ancient peoples protected the whole family. there is logic in how laws were applied in those societies but we need to stop and think about conditions at the time as snowbird and psacramento are recommending. You can't expect to have a fair discussion if you insist on taking the passage out of the context in which it was written

Yes i have not read the whole bible or studied the circumstances of their time particular well, but i have read the relevant chapter and a good part of the book it is puplished in. So let me ask you this: Can you imagine a primitive tribe or group of people who had a law that dictated that a rape victim (again: 31% propability the person suffer from PTS) should marry the rapist, and where the circumstances were such that you could not possible give them a better law that would protect the women more? Is that really such an easy thing to do, because I would really like to learn more about those circumstances you have such an easy time to imagine because right now, i am fresh out of ideas - no matter how i turn it in my head i allways think: "hey, what about just making it a law the man should pay the woman he violated each month untill she got married, and that was it".

I'm guessing you are talking about the "primitive" amazonians.

well for a start the primitive amazonian woman is likely to fight off the man and possibly kill him if he attemts to rape her. If he does success in raping her, her family will likely take revenge.

Also in the "primitive" rain forests the spirits of the forest ensure everyone behaves ethically. Everyone is aware of these "spirits" and tries to work in harmony with them. If they don't they are punished or worse their family is punished.

    r.

I agree with your take. Men playing the blame game is also a very popular theme in ancient stories (non biblical too)

Recently I was discussing something similar and you may be interested in this (it also extends some of psacramento's points)

When humans made laws for themselves the expectation was that everyone would adhere to them and peace and tranquilty would prevail as in the garden of Eden. However the thinking developed that laws could be broken and as long as one did not get found out it was okay. This thinking also became part of convention. So on this understanding Adam and Eve broke the law in secret and were quite happy to go on eating. Only when they were discovered and only then did convention demand that they be punished.

Wow this thread obviously hit a nerve! I don't think there are many other 10 page ones are there?

Let me extend it just a little bit more:

Sometimes, I wonder why God made men!
I know He knows best, but I swear I wonder!

Firstly, let's work off the assumption that there is in fact a living God which you have a personal relationship with (a big assumption whether you like it or not). You don't really 'know' he knows best, you simply assume he does. Perhaps your doubts are correct? Maybe he's an incompetent buffoon like you suspect? As George Carlin said regarding the works of 'God' :

" This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently-run universe, this guy would've been out on his all-powerful ass a long time ago".

    Tee hee hee.

My father, an alcoholic, was run off by my mother!

I was raised in an all-female household.

    Can you tell?

    LOL.
