I cannot watch violent horror movies like "Saw" or "The Step-father" (remember that one?). I had to sit through "The Step-father" and it didn't excite me or calm me, it made me angry. I know I was watching fiction but I felt so helpless and pissed cuz there wasn't a damn thing I could do to stop the carnage. Likewise with violent video games. Do I have a dark side? Perhaps, but if I do it has nothing to do with harming someone (real or not) for my pleasure. And no I've never done drugs and I'm not addicted to alcohol, I'm what you might call straight but I'm not so narrow.

Coolhand Luke, I'm sorry if I offended you.......I was just truly stunned when I read your initial posting on the subject----a subject I apparently don't know much about.

No interest, no compulsion, haven't seen them.

So you like Jung. Me too. What about Myers/Briggs, who picked up where Jung left off? Do you know your personality type?

I'm an enfj. You'll find a good test at: humanmetrics.com.

As for the shadow, I get it, we all have a hidden self. I feel yours is a bit disturbing though. Setting things on fire and getting enjoyment out of it is pyromania. Setting people on fire and enjoying it is sadism. These are not "shadows" they are psychosis. You may benefit from telling a therapist of your feelings.

doesn't matter how you defend and rationalize it, "it is in my nature to seek out chaos. i love violence. i like to hurt people. i would like to watch the world burn and hear its screams knowing that im the one that poured the gasoline and lit the match. the idea of it makes me smile. this is my shadow self" is a scary statement. I don't think most people feel that way. As for child molesters and violent criminals and murderers, what we need is to put them away so that we can be safer, not so that they will be punished. They are locked up because the rest of us have the right to go about our business without fear. We pay quite a bit in taxes to house these people, for the most part it is humane even if the criminal who is in prison is very vile and despicable.

Mary--I understand what you are saying. There is something wrong if you enjoy seeing another human being suffer. There may be people who deserve to pay with their life--but they don't need to suffer.

And yet Mary, when you drive by a horrifying accident... you look.

    Odd isn't it?

    She didn't CAUSE the accident.
