Unfortunately, they do not promote over-qualified employees. They would have to pay them too much. That makes no sense. Care to explain whom they promote? If conditions were so bad, why did you wait four years to leave? Hmmm.
I'll explain this, and then I'm done. Sorry it took so long. I just spend way too time on another board debating JWS.
Several people at my store quit Walmart because of this practice.
Example 1---A customer service manager, who had been with the company for six years, wanted to move up. A Dept Manager position opened up, and she applied. She was the best qualified for the job. Plus, she had many years experience in retail BEFORE working for Walmart. She only made about $11.50 an hour even after 6 years.
They'd recently hired a teenaged cashier who I had to train because she had no prior retail experience. She was paid $7.25 per hr. Guess who got the Dept Manager job? Why? They only had to give her a $.50 raise.
Example 2---An opening in personnel that had been applied for by several long-time employees who had ample experience in office work was posted. They are supposed to interview EVERYONE who applies, and then let you know whether you got the position or not. A cashier who was there for only a month, made $7.50 per hr, and who'd missed at least 5 days of work already, was promoted to the position. A $1.00 raise.
Plus they never even let anyone know the position was filled. Sneaky bastards! They ended up having to train her forever, because she couldn't catch on. I'm friends with the personnel coordinator, who was pissed as hell that they stuck her with a new employee.
Example 3---A new guy who worked at the service desk, and made $7.64 per hr, had many complaints filed against him by fellow associates and customers. He had a really bad body odor, wore the same clothes every day, and was warned several times by management about it. He was a nice guy, but seemed oblivious to the fact that you had to keep a can of Glade with you when you were near him. We all thought he would be fired soon, as he ignored what management said and continued to come to work unwashed.
But, nooo...he got promoted to the Vision Center. A job that almost everyone who works at Walmart wants. They had an opening, and because they only had to pay him an extra $1.00, he got the job.
I think that should do it....
As to why I stayed for 4 years...the first year it was just a part-time spur of the moment job to supplement my full-time job. (I did claims for medicaid insurance.) My fiance and I had broken up and he moved out. I was stuck with $900 rent, lights, gas, car note, etc. As I was only there two days a week for 5 hours, I didn't see all the crap I saw when I went full-time.
The goverment medicaid company laid off 12 people, including me, so I ended up working full-time at Walmart out of necessity. The struggle to pay all of those bills and take care of two kids left me almost no time to look for another job. Plus, I was going to school two nights a week. I thought sure I would be promoted at Walmart. I kept trying to stick it out, thinking things would be better. By the 4th year, I saw that it just gets worse and worse, so I left.
Ok, that's it. I'm going to find something else to bitch about.
