I hate Walmart!

Unfortunately, they do not promote over-qualified employees. They would have to pay them too much.
That makes no sense. Care to explain whom they promote? If conditions were so bad, why did you wait four years to leave? Hmmm
    .

I'll explain this, and then I'm done. Sorry it took so long. I just spend way too time on another board debating JWS.

Several people at my store quit Walmart because of this practice.

Example 1---A customer service manager, who had been with the company for six years, wanted to move up. A Dept Manager position opened up, and she applied. She was the best qualified for the job. Plus, she had many years experience in retail BEFORE working for Walmart. She only made about $11.50 an hour even after 6 years.

They'd recently hired a teenaged cashier who I had to train because she had no prior retail experience. She was paid $7.25 per hr. Guess who got the Dept Manager job? Why? They only had to give her a $.50 raise.

Example 2---An opening in personnel that had been applied for by several long-time employees who had ample experience in office work was posted. They are supposed to interview EVERYONE who applies, and then let you know whether you got the position or not. A cashier who was there for only a month, made $7.50 per hr, and who'd missed at least 5 days of work already, was promoted to the position. A $1.00 raise.

Plus they never even let anyone know the position was filled. Sneaky bastards! They ended up having to train her forever, because she couldn't catch on. I'm friends with the personnel coordinator, who was pissed as hell that they stuck her with a new employee.

Example 3---A new guy who worked at the service desk, and made $7.64 per hr, had many complaints filed against him by fellow associates and customers. He had a really bad body odor, wore the same clothes every day, and was warned several times by management about it. He was a nice guy, but seemed oblivious to the fact that you had to keep a can of Glade with you when you were near him. We all thought he would be fired soon, as he ignored what management said and continued to come to work unwashed.

But, nooo...he got promoted to the Vision Center. A job that almost everyone who works at Walmart wants. They had an opening, and because they only had to pay him an extra $1.00, he got the job.

I think that should do it....

As to why I stayed for 4 years...the first year it was just a part-time spur of the moment job to supplement my full-time job. (I did claims for medicaid insurance.) My fiance and I had broken up and he moved out. I was stuck with $900 rent, lights, gas, car note, etc. As I was only there two days a week for 5 hours, I didn't see all the crap I saw when I went full-time.

The goverment medicaid company laid off 12 people, including me, so I ended up working full-time at Walmart out of necessity. The struggle to pay all of those bills and take care of two kids left me almost no time to look for another job. Plus, I was going to school two nights a week. I thought sure I would be promoted at Walmart. I kept trying to stick it out, thinking things would be better. By the 4th year, I saw that it just gets worse and worse, so I left.

Ok, that's it. I'm going to find something else to bitch about.

Ok, gotta say after watching this thread this last week...I am not going to hate. I am really working hard at not letting the little sh*t get to me. One of these things is the people behind the counter. There are a million things that happen with the people behind the counter that just push my buttons. Maybe it was because while in customer service I took it serious. I expect people to do the job they hire in for the correct way. So instead of getting pissed off, I am trying to not let it get to me. Not obsess, and not be mad a day or week later at lousy customer service or a person who let bad manners get in the way of them doing a good job.

I will not freak out on cashiers...I will not obsess, I will not be overly critical, I will not let my thought process think on them for days to come. I will let the little crap go....

    Little crap go...little crap go...

Stop Wal-Mart's 'backdoor entry': Vandana Shiva

New Delhi, Delhi, India, 2007-08-06 22:45:01 Today's Top Headlines The entry into India of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. through its tie up with Bharti Enterprises will pose a threat to millions of small traders and farmers and destroy India's retail democracy, renowned green campaigner Vandana Shiva said Monday.

'The assumption that Wal-Mart brings skills to the retail sector that will benefit Indian farmers and consumers is totally false. Wal-Mart specialises in long-distance supply and large volumes of purchase from single producers at predatory prices,' she said in a statement.

'The Bharti Wal-Mart announcement is a threat to the livelihood security of millions and a threat to the food sovereignty of our farmers and retail democracy. This partnership will increase corporate concentration over agriculture production; push our diverse and decentralized systems of production to uniformity and thousands of food miles,' she added.

On the 60th anniversary of India's independence, Shiva said small and marginal farmers, hawkers, tiny shopkeepers and consumers, 'have declared 9th August, 2007, Quit India Day - as a day for freedom from corporate retail with the slogan Corporations Quit Retail.'

'Bharti Wal Mart Private Ltd is not needed by the people of India... We demand the backdoor entry also be stopped,' she said, adding that protests and mass meetings would be organised all over the country.

It's also hard to maintain your "happy face" and be polite for 9 hours when you just had a cell phone thrown at you because you wouldn't sell a customer more than three packages of cold medicine containing ephedrine. Even though you explained in a polite tone of voice that it was a STATE LAW and you would be fired on the spot if you did. And you have to stand there and take it because you will be fired on the spot if you retaliate in any way.

I have seen cashiers have to be taken to the back because they were crying so hard from rude and abusive customers. They do not pay enough for that.

Obviously it's enough for some people or they wouldn't have any staff. Anybody who thinks they can earn more than they get in Wal-mart is free to work somewhere else.

Sadly, it's mostly college kids who are just trying to make it through school. Think about that next time you shop.

Some people are just not cut out for retail. Now before you say I don't know what I'm talking about, I've worked retail for the past two and a half years.

Exactly. Most of the people working low-end jobs are only there temporarily to gain money and/or work experience. That's why they're generally happy to put up with low pay and no benefits. It's a brilliant place to work as long as you don't try to make a career of it. Those who wish to earn more money need to learn more skills to become more valuable on the job market (which as you point out is exactly what most Wal-mart staff do).
