I would chalk it up to poor rendering - the "motion blur" of the smiting weapon, the shadows.
What really gets me is the face lifts the guys have had - look at the apparent age of the faces compared to the apparent age of the hands! Wrinkles and veins standing out (not unlike my own) on the hands, but so baby-faced. Hmm...baby-faced but with beards.
Now *that's* subliminal!
