    K'ang 9

As told by Jerry M. Pickard

K'ang was at rest under the tree that shaded his dwelling. All around him the evidence of his gentle labor flourished,
and yet the old tree was gnarled and stunted. The boy knelt respectfully near him.

"Namya K'ang, Why is this tree so ugly?" K'ang paused in his thoughts. "It is not, boy. Only what you see seems
ugly. Look more, and see again."

"It is old, and bent. It leans over away from the wind. It has no fruit." K'ang said, "Why is that ugly in your eyes?"

"Everything else in your gardens is apyana, robust, strong and beautiful." The boy replied.

"There is beauty in all things if you but see." Said K'ang. "Does not the tree live? It has been there as a sentinel, it
makes shade, it embraces the birds and gives them night sanctuary. It makes a place among its branches for the
butterflies. It gives food to the insects that pollinate the other plants, and is a shelter for the weaker animals from
predators. Listen to the tree and let it tell you of itself, then you will see the beauty." K'ang paused, tired of himself
for speaking so much. "Look boy! See the tree from all sides, and you will see truly that all sides are different, but all
the same. This is life. Now make tea."

Another one from Zen Mind, Beginners Mind:

If you understand the cause of conflict as some fixed or one-sided idea, you can find meaning in various practices without being caught by any of them. If you do not realize this point you will be easily caught by some particular way, and you will say, "This is enlightenment! This is perfect practice. This is our way. The rest of the ways are not perfect. This is the best way." This is a big mistake. There is no particular way in true practice. You should find your own particular way, and you should know what kind of practice you have right now. Knowing both the advantages and disadvantages of some special practice, you can practice that special way without danger. But if you have a one-sided attitude, you will ignore the disadvantage of the practice, emphasizing only its good part. Eventually you will discover the worst side of the practice, and become discouraged when it is too late. This is silly.

I hope I haven't posted either of these already.. In any case, they are both from the Book of Chuang Tzu, the second is a quote by Confucius:

Chuang Tzu was one day fishing in the Pu river when the King of Chu despatched two senior officials to visit him with a message. The message said, 'I would like to trouble you to administer my lands.'

Chuant Tzu kept a firm grip on his fishing rod and said, 'I hear that in Chu there is a sacred tortoise which died three thousand years ago. The King keeps this in his ancestral temple, wrapped and enclosed. Tell me, would this tortoise have wanted to die and leave his shell to be venerated? Or would he rather have lived and continued to crawl about in the mud?'

The two senior officials said, 'It would have rather lived and continued to crawl about in the mud.'

Chuant Tzu said, 'Shove off, then! I will continue to crawl about in the mud!'

    More from that nut Chuang:

Uncle Legless and Uncle Cripple were touring the area of the Hill of the Dark Prince and the zone of Kun Lun where the Yellow Emperor stayed.* Without warning a willow tree suddenly shot up out of Uncle Cripple's left elbow. He was certainly most surprised and somewhat put out.

'Sir, do you dislike this?' said Uncle Legless.

'No,' said Uncle Cripple. 'What should I dislike? Life exists through scrounging; if life comes through scrounging, then life is like a dump. Death and birth are like the morning and the night. You and I, Sir, observe the ways of transformation and now I am being transformed. So how could I dislike this?'
