born in, what difference does it make?
i was thinking about this one a lot over the last few weeks.
what difference does it make whether you were born into a cult or were brought in as a teen or adult?

On top of all you mentioned because my dad was the top dog in the congregation, I was known as a preachers son in school, and then had to live with the guilt of him not being able to hold the position he wanted because I discovered the "gift" of the double life. It's no wonder some of us have baggage.
today my mother, a devoted jw of 40+ years, expalined to me that studying the watchtower publications "taught her" how to study!
she went on to describe how the weekly watchtower study taught her how to truly study, by underlining the most important part of the paragraph.
funny, i do not recall that as the primary method of study for the rest of the world - most of the textbooks i have read did not have a numbered set of questions at the end of each paragraph.
In some religions they chant

these opponents have presented explanations that range in quality from truly inspired justifications to pitifully lame excuses.

since being raised a jw, everything unexplainable has been attributed to demons.
Happened to see a show on TLC tonight entited "A Haunting in Georgia"
A young girl saw apparitions in the families new house and the situation was examined, and one man called in looked at it from what I would call a scientific viewpoint. I found it interesting that he discovered it only affected the girl, and eventually her younger sister and the mother, not the father. In digging deeper, he also discovered that the mother's parents had been affected by sightings like this in the past too. It seemed to be something genetic. That as well as a magnetic field eminating from a nearby fault line.
I have to add that this show had it's share of music and imagery that sent chills up my back. Typical TV production.
I just have to add that I can see a BMW too, I just have to go to the dealer.
after growing up a jw all my life, i have no clue why people would want to be part of any religion.. i don't get the mormon stuff.
i don't understand the catholic faith.
i really don't understand the muslim beliefs and all their levels and the suicide bombers.

If the JW's translated it correctly as the common grave of mankind, it's rather funny thinking about all these people and their religions, because I am fairly sure that in reality everyone is on that highway with you.

I'd be a lot happier if I didn't have to hear people connecting their god to everything that happens in their lives. It would be alot better for me if they kept their beliefs to themselves. (Edited to add the word "their" before god.)

so early this morning i was up cutting it up and getting it out of the road.. now as i was doing this i started thinking about the noah story and what it would take to build something out of wood as large as the ark was described to be.
now i had a chain saw that made relatively quick work of it, but i can tell you that even a 2 foot piece of green lumber is quite heavy.

Thanks for the input. The tree is actually not that big and not that close to the house. There are only about 2 branches left. I can easily cut them down without any danger.

How an ark that size could be contructed by the number of people described doing it is beyond comprehension. How were the trees cut down? How was the wood cut precisely enough to allow it to be used to construct a vessel that wouldn't leak? I'm fairly sure that the grocery stores and restaurants that we have today didn't exist then, so feeding yourself had to be a major concern of the day back then.
I came away from the experience wondering how I could have ever been so gullible as to believe such a story.
