Being lied to by parents
by What is Truth? ini mean pretty much all parents lie to their children at some point about something and usually it was to protect them or just wasn't something important and it normally doesn't affect the relationship between them and their child.
but how does a person reconcile and recover their appreciation for their parents after finding out almost everything they taught them was an evil lie?
i don't mean going back to the same relationship as i know that is gone, especially if the parents are still deceived.

I've been on both sides of the fence so to speak. Born and raised a JW and raised my own kids as JWs (they are now adults). My parents taught me what they believed to be the truth and I in turn did the same. I don't blame my parents and I don't blame myself. We were deceived. They carried on believing it, I didn't. Hopefully my children will see through it too eventually. -

What is Your Brainwashing IQ ? Take the Quiz
by Finkelstein inso how much do you understand about brainwashing, its application and effects ?
essentially lures people into its grasps and then brainwashes them for exploitation and manipulative purposes by using mental indoctrination techniques.. here's a quick quiz to take to answer some of these questions.

I got 19. Very interesting quiz.
Something made me think, it takes a long time to really brainwash someone, baby steps, subtle coercion etc so when a person has been brainwashed the brain shuts down when a 'red flag' comes up. This must be why it's so difficult to get our loved ones to confront issues that make no sense. So there's no point in rushing in all guns blazing to get them to change their way of thinking, it just can't be done. So the same technique must be used in reverse. Tiny thought provoking questions. Then leave it. One little step at a time. It can take years.

I'm a regular reader of the site and it has helped me enormously. I still have to attend for family's sake and their articles have helped me to be able to refute a lot of what family members say without coming across to them as 'apostate'. It's a great site for JWs still in but who are just awakening and who are beginning to question things.
It's great for those of us who are still 'in' but who disagree with a lot of the doctrines and policies but who still have a love of God and the bible.

They're Making it Impossible to Fade
by DarioKehl infor those of you who have already faded due to family still being in, have you noticed how the noose is tightening?.
if it's not memorial, it's special day assembly.
if it's not that, it's convention or the special talk.

I must admit the business about the blood card has bothered me. I do not carry one and haven't for a few years. I still go to a few meetings because of family but they know where I stand. That I really only go for their sakes.
It's becoming more obvious to others that I'm 'fading' and I get the love bombing whenever I show up at a meeting. I've made it clear that I don't want to talk about anything if I get asked. A barrier goes up that they can't get through, I only let anyone know what I want them to know. The blood card issue is something I am going to have to make clear is nothing to do with them, that anything medical is my own personal business and I don't want to share it. It may be difficult but they can't force me to do what I don't want to do.They will have to live with it.
I'm very interested though to find out how others are dealing with 'fading'. There's so many that are still going to meetings and assemblies and it helps a lot to know how they are coping. It's such a fine balancing act,

Well, I guess Jesus went into the temple and turned over the money table and chased the animals out but at least he didn't film it and post it on youtube..... -

Any elders out there? How to Local needs talks work?
by Letts Party inso a local needs talk was lovingly given at our hall last week that i'm positive targeted me specifically.
it had to do with missing meetings for work.
they even had a demo on what we should do if our boss asks us to stay overtime on a meeting night (basically say "no" and risk losing your great job which you have no desire whatsoever to lose)... so i'm aware that there's a sort of protocol the elders follow when someone in the hall needs to work on something.

Don't bother about it. What gives them the right to say what you can and can't do with your life? It's YOUR life and you can do with it whatever you choose to do. Why worry about what other people think?

Understanding our CURE from ADDICTION to the Watchtower cult.
by Fernando inwould it be fair to say many of the posts on jwn are in essence about this?.
if we could better understand what worked for us, would we be better able to help others?.
where do basic human needs ("met" by the cult) end, and where does addiction start?.

This is a tough one for me. I'm a born-in, all my family are in and my closest friends (thankfully they know how I feel and about my doubts and love me anyway). So although I'd be happy to give it all up, it's impossible. This is their life and makes them who they are. Does that make me addicted? I don't think so.... but I need THEM. It's a crazy place to be and as it's a part of their life, the ones I love, it has to stay a part of mine. I hate the doctrines, the control, the influence and can see right through the BS but these are people I love and it's important to them. So where does that leave me?

My hubby told me I should read it, just before he left for the meeting. Well, I had a quick scan and a read of your review BU2B (excellent), now I need to be able to refute it all without making him angry...
I've already used the angle of 'what about the religions that feed the poor' (like the salvation army). No religion gets it all right. What about the preaching work? It's true they do the preaching work as Jesus told his followers to do but what's the point when you're teaching something he didn't tell us to? That's when the drawbridge goes up....

I was there as well today DD and I read it the same way as you. What made me wince too was when they did that paragraph about Korah and Moses, they included Aaron in with Moses.. what goes straight over their heads is that while Moses was away up the mountain getting the laws his brother Aaron was happily complying with what the people wanted... making a golden calf.
