this is obviously a question for the older generation.
i'm really curious what it was like to be a witness in the 60's and 70's?.
was the society as strict as it is today?.
I was born in the 70's--so my JW memories of the time are few and hazy.
I remember the early 80's a little better...and can compare it to the 90's and all the way up to 2009 or so. And my memories of the late 70's and early 80's were a more of a inclusive, social group. Renting out skating rinks. Large congregation gatherings. JWs seemed warmer, friendlier and more sincere.
As Sir82 pointed out: JWs were readers, knew their own teachings and could argue them at length at the door.
the wt articles for the past 2 weeks were the typical every-3-months-or-so attempt at justifying the sovereignty of the jw popes, the governing body.. aside from the usual specious reasoning and ridiculous assertions, i noted this:.
the articles went through great semantic pains to emphasize that, for the jws, jesus is "the leader", while the gb are merely "those taking the lead".. what, exactly, is the difference between a "leader" vs. "one who is taking the lead"?.
in what other sphere of human experience is such semantic pretzel logic even close to rational?.
Wordplay of those who want it both ways.
JWs have human leaders in the form of a top-down hierarchy, emanating from the Governing Body on down to the local body of elders. This leadership more pronounced than in most churches and denominations. It is enforced leadership...those who do not obey the leaders are subject to secret backroom trials and extreme penalties that people in most religions do not experience.

think about this people, they are saying it was jesus who told us the end was going to come in 1975. then before the 1914 generation passed away no later than the 1990's.
When other religions don't have something right, change their teachings, or have a scandal, failed endtime predictions--it's because they are part of Babylon the Great the World Empire of False Religion and deserve violent destruction.
When Watchtower does it: shrug. Nobody's perfect.

not long ago, there was a funeral for a sister i haven’t know very much, so i did not attend.
however, some old “friends” i know drove down to town to assist and i ended up spending some time with them.
quite honestly, i was happy to see them again.
I've never experienced this with coworkers. I'm always myself around them and they seem themselves as well.
With JWs, that's another story. I can so relate.
at last night's clam the circuit overseer made this comment, "we elders sometimes have to act as judges in the congregation.
but we (the elders) are imperfect, and so cannot know everything about judicial matters.
that is why we (the elders) have the biblical rule that there must be at least two witnesses to wrongdoing.
i recently came across a female youtuber called "bridget azaz".
she has made a number of youtubes recording discussions that she has had with a number of jws.
