television listings and movie theatres are filled with lots of seasonal films now, and many dvds are also available for films from earlier years.
i confess to having a difficult time selecting just one.
among my favorites would have to be christmas vacation, with chevy chase.

I love the Christmas tv shows, too. Especially the classics. "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" is my favorite, followed by "Little Drummer Boy" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas".

If you go into "search" (it's in the blue letters at the top of the board), you can find lots of information in the archives by just typing in a key word.
Your instincts are correct regarding your mother. She belongs to a legalistic, high control religion. For more information on high control religions, check out the search mentioned above. Also, read the books the folks here suggest. Most find them to be very helpful.
A great book that I've been reading that compares a legalistic system to a grace-based system of Christianity is "The Grace Awakening" by Charles R. Swindoll. I highly recomend it if you are looking for something to help you understand legalism from a Christian perspective.

Am I the only one who knows who Firpo Carr is? Nope. He's the guy that wrote the book defending the divine name as being Jehovah. I used to have that book. In fact, his intro in which he explained how he attended seminary without the elder's express permission got me to thinking:) As to why he is touring and lecturing, I haven't a clue.

i have seen quite a few posts from many ex-jw women about how unhappy they were about male domination in congregation.
was it really that bad?
when i was still a jw, no one ever told me anything to that effect.
In a word, Yes! If you are really interested in knowing what it's like for women in the org, do a search and read up. It's a very painful, often convered topic. "I always got pissed off when they talked about Leviticus and how " a womens cycle" made her unclean for 7 days before and 7 days after her period. Ok that leaves about a week a month that women would be considered "clean" And that, of course, would be her most fertile week, lol.
i was watching pleasantville (tobey maguire, reese witherspoon) on tv last night.
as i watched i started thinking that although the movie isnt about religion, the way the characters and storyline evolved, reminded me of how it felt like to be in the "truth" and then to be in reality.. the movie is how two teens get stuck in a 50's tv show similar to the perfection of "leave it to beaver" everything is perfect in this town, but everyones in black and white becuase they are not in reality.
when the kids arrive they start to the show the people in the town art, books, love, sex and everything starts to turn into color.

"Pleasantville" was one of the first movies that got me thinking. Then there was "Truman Show," "The Matrix," and "The Scarlet Letter." And for some reason "The Island of Doctor Mareux,(sp)" or something like that.
I also read the book "The Scarlet Letter," and "1984." I've heard "Animal Farm" is along the same lines, but didn't read that one.
"Pleasantville" and "The Scarlet Letter" hit me really hard. Especially "Pleasantville," as art is my passion.

i recently went to a "pentacostal church" with my neighbor who has been a devout pentacostal for 30 years.
she has been asking me for years to come to her church since i left jw's so i finally went with her a few sundays ago.
i must admit i was nearly scared "speechless".
Well, I don't know that I'd call it a cult-like practice, but my ex-stepmother, who claims to be a born again Pentecostal, called my grandmother after my aunt died simply to tell my grandmother that my aunt was going to hell because she was in the "wrong religion". It was an incredibly unloving, unChristian thing to do, and Grandma is still hurting from it over a year later. Perhaps my ex stepmother's religious ideas influenced what she did, but I think it stemmed more from the fact that she couldn't cause a division between my grandparents and my father (their son) after he divorced the woman.
At any rate, it reminded me a WHOLE LOT of all the Watchtower studies on the fate of unbelieving mates and family members at Armageddon. What I can't figure out is why people who claim to be Christians can make such "authoritative" claims, in light of the scriptures that say not to judge others.

Perhaps Ms Williams is manifesting her doubts with that article herself. Either that, or she just didn't study enough:)
