Dec 15th WT: "Be like Solomon and don't go to university / don't be like Solomon and join a sports team!"
by cedars inthanks to 'gayle' for bringing our attention to the fact that the december 15th watchtower has now been uploaded to jw.org.
it doesn't take long to reach the first juicy bit on pages 8 and 9, this time regarding higher education:.
it would be good to ask, am i taking to heart solomons example of treasuring divine wisdom?

My father's funeral
by jwfacts inlast week i attended my father's funeral in hobart.
i was the first time i have been in a kingdom hall in several years, and many years since i had attended the hall of my childhood, but felt like it was just yesterday.
the funeral talk was quite a departure from normal, so worth writing about.

Paul, thank you for sharing this with us. You have certainly been through a lot this week; we all, in general, expect to someday lose our parents, and wonder how we'll handle such a difficult time. With the added difficulties that the religion brings, it can be an emotional train wreck. I'm glad that you've pulled through alright in spite of the antisocial behavior of some. Hopefully your mother is able to draw support from her congregation and the many people that she has met over the years.
I am hoping for some peace, strength, and rest for you and your family.

For the board atheists....
by Jack C. inthis is a personal observation and certainly not representative of all atheists.
i enjoy discussions with folks of this persuasion; in general they appear well read and somewhat more educated than many believers.
as a group most atheists cringe and become insensed when discussing the existence of a deity with believers especially fundamentalists.

I generally don't argue with folks about something like the existence/non-existence of a creator. But I do feel that since many fundamentalists will eagerly use the Bible as a basis for their arguments, it is only fair that others use the Bible as well, particularly when pointing out the nasty, mean, violent, jealous, voyeuristic god they seem to be fans of.
I guess that this isn't a very good answer to your questions, Jack, because I choose not to debate with others...but I do constantly debate internally. I read and research and am open to new ideas about god, gods, religion, philosophy, you name it. My current 'stance', if you will, is that I personally don't find compelling evidence for a creator, but I don't think that I could ever close the book on the subject. Humans have grappled with these questions for millennia, and I don't think that a few short years of searching could settle the issues for me.

Fallout from the apostate-bashing WT article?
by cedars ini've noticed there are a few excellent threads on here about sunday's 9/11 watchtower study.
my own analysis of its more blatantly farcical claims (including that of apostates being "mentally diseased") can be seen here.. what i really wanted to know is - what has the fallout been?
has it created any horror-stories within people's families or homes, etc?

My still-in Dad called me today just to say hi and that he loves me. I think that he has a bit of conscious-class in him; he has always been more about love and kindness than following the letter of Watchtower law. He even confided once that he was ashamed of some of the things he had done as an elder.
Still, he stands to lose everything if he ever left the group, and always retreats to the 'Jehovah is using imperfect men' argument.
His small gestures like this mean the world to me, especially given the timing.

So I am possessed am I?
by trailerfitter inwell after a long spell of silence, i managed to get into a discussion about what happens when i get angry in the heat of the moment arguements with my jw wife.
i did have and arguement with my partner and ended up throwing something on the floor as i was very wound up.
(it is much better to express my anger this way than to hurt anyone).

July 15th WT out - Coming out Swinging at Apostates Hard
by LostGeneration inthis is one of the most aggressive watchtowers i think i have ever read.. four study articles on not "following the crowd" not following unrealities(page 13) not following false teachers, meaning apostates of course(p 15).
avoiding false teachers means "refusing to read their literature, watch tv programs that feature them, examine their web sites, or add comments to their blogs.
(para 7, pg 16).
