GEOFFREY JACKSON THE PERSONABLE FACE OF JW.ORG...BUT IT AIN'T OVER YET BUDDY
by steve2 insince geoffrey jackson's appearance before the australian royal commission on friday there has for some been an expressed feeling of anticlimax.
it is as though he was given too much latitude to preach, to claim ignorance and to skirt questions.
more to the point, as much as i myself thought i would never have expected to say this, gj actually came across as likeable and - don't throttle me please!

I think to the average person outside of the JW world, Jackson appears as you say, steve2. He certainly didn't bumble around as much as the elders. It was apparent though that he did not give direct answers to some of the questions asked of him. The Royal Commission knows this.
But knowing what goes on within the religion, knowing that these GB 'fellow workers' autograph Bibles and are definitely elevated above the role of 'fellow worker' says Jackson attempted to downplay the GB's importance to the public and Royal Commission when in fact, they are and have stated they are, God's Sole Channel of Communication. This is not a mere 'fellow worker' type role. Jackson is a liar. And the Royal Commission knows this.
GJ attempted to display a humble and Biblically knowledgable appearance, but was not convincing to me. He could not give any scripture that stated only men should be Judges for example. This is a to-do for the Watchtower to get back to the Royal Commission on. I do not think he/they will be able to do it. There IS a scripture that clearly states women can be judges in, what d'ya know, Judges 4:4-5 where Deborah sat in judgment in Israel.
As I have felt all along, their use of the Bible and their interpretation is where they falter, as do all religions because they have an agenda which is also flawed. He kept saying that taking scripture out of context is where secular people have issues. So who says the Watchtower is taking scripture in the correct context? And what if scripture is flawed/incorrect/inaccurate/contradictory/illegal? What if there is no scripture for an issue they are facing? How can one determine what to take literally versus allegorically versus false? Believing that all scripture is inspired and from God is a foundational flaw. But I bet Jackson has never conducted a comparison of the 4 Gospels. I wonder if he read Bart Ehrman's book "Misquoting Jesus" what his reaction would be (I can pretty well guess).
GJ also stated they do not go beyond what is written. This is also a lie. Some, if not all, of their key doctrines do this. No where in the Bible does it state that you cannot celebrate birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. No where in the Bible does it state handing out Awake! and Watchtower magazines is the definition of 'works'. No where is the term 'Governing Body' used. Hell/Hades is definitely Biblical and they have chosen to not believe in it.
One thing that Jackson did make clear. It will make things a whole lot easier for them if reporting of child abuse is made mandatory. This is what needs to happen for all the human rights violations this group is committing, not just child abuse.

What does it mean to be inactive??
by DATA-DOG inwell, i sat through day 1 or the "imitate jesus" convention.
they released the new brochure for inactive ones.
while no tomo-esque rants took place, it seems that the official policy is that "inactivity" merits the death sentence.

If you handed that brochure to my Dad he wouldn't know what to do with it. -

Im feeling depressed
by BlackWolf inwell its been a while since i've posted on here but i guess i just need someone to talk to.
i've recently turned 16 and i guess life is just starting to hit me like a ton of bricks.
i'm still not sure what i want to do with my life.

Hi BlackWolf ... thank you for posting.
My advice to you is to do what you love.
If going to art school is what you'd like to do, then get a plan together to make it happen. Are there any art teachers who you could talk to in the local public or high school or maybe online that could point you to a mentor? I just Googled 'mentors for art students' and there seem to be a number of links. Have you started a portfolio of your work? Maybe if you haven't you could begin working on this or if you have, work on a project you think might be good for it. Sometimes actually doing something towards your goals helps with motivation.
I am quite shocked that parents who are homeschooling their children are not under some tight scrutiny. This seems illegal to me not to teach your children the necessary subjects to allow them to be the same equivalency as publicly educated children.
BlackWolf said: I really do love my parents and I think they are good people that have just been misguided.
This is me as well BlackWolf. Remember, your life is yours to create. If you let others do it for you, you will never be happy. If you don't want to be a JW then don't be. I was born-in and never baptized. I have tried to live my life so that the claims about worldly people that JW's make are unfounded. I have a good job. I went to College. You can do this too. My parents did not save for our educations so I had to pay for it myself. I got jobs babysitting and working in the local grocery store and convenience store throughout high school. I banked money and also got a student loan, which I paid back as soon as I got my job.
Good luck with things and please keep us updated.

Mr Jackson said the GB has apologized in the past?
by notsurewheretogo inplease enlighten me as to where and when...

The wrong conclusions were due, not to malice or to unfaithfulness to Christ, but to a fervent desire to realize the fulfillment of God’s promises in their own time.
For over 2000 years Christians have been waiting for this. AIn't. Gonna. Happen. Ever. So no, you can't trust God's promises.
As for the GB, well, Jackson apologized during the RC a few times to Stewart and McClellan as sometimes he didn't understand the question.

exJW Psychology 102--How to Ask a Question When Questions Aren't Allowed
by Billy the Ex-Bethelite innow that enough time has passed and i've moved away, i think i'm overdue to share some of the stories from my fade.
i've mentioned some of this before, but i think it deserves its own thread.. we all would like to be able to freely ask questions about jw beliefs and get our family and friends to really think about certain questions.
however, when you're a baptized jw, you really can't ask any good questions or you'll get the "apostate" label slapped on you!

Ok, just got through Part 1 of Day 8. Whew...this is exhausting. I need a break.
I took some notes this time. Jackson emphasized at least 3 times that under no circumstances would women ever be elders. Quoted 1 Timothy 3:1 as the scriptural reference for overseer/elder to be a man.
Jackson did lie on a few points. He didn't exactly answer Stewart's question are you appointed by Jehovah. Jackson went on about being viewed as JW's 'fellow workers' which is crap. He didn't actually answer Stewart's question about being Jehovah's spokes people -- he just skirted it saying that would be presumptuous of us. Well GJ, you guys ARE presumptuous. He did mention living in the last days which makes them look bat sh!t crazy to every one outside the Borg.
Jackson stated they are a faith based organization and not concerned with legal matters. WTF? This is a very disturbing statement. But then goes on to say that if reporting is made mandatory that makes it very easy for them. He uses Proverbs 25:8-10 as the basis for not rushing into a legal dispute with your neighbour (I just shake my head... how can you even contemplate hesitating over getting into a legal dispute about sexual abuse of a child?!!).
Judge Peter McClellan asked him if JWs believe in the 'children should be seen and not heard' ideal. Jackson answered "We encourage children to communicate with their parents." Huh? I have no idea if this is true but what I do know, growing up as a JW child, you learn what NOT to communicate to your parents especially if you disagree with the religion.
Jackson brought up headship and wives being in subjection to their husbands and husbands are head of wives -- this made me throw up a little in my mouth.
McClellan wants the JWs to provide a scriptural reference for judges only being men. Wifibandit has already identified a scripture where a woman sat as a judge in ancient Israel (Judges 4:4-5). BAM!

It is extremely difficult, maybe impossible, to wrest power, especially misogynistic power, from the hands of men whose mindsets are stuck in the 1st century. -

This past Tue I received an email from the Royal Commission's CEO Philip Reed telling me that Angus Stewart had asked Philip Reed to respond to me on Angus' behalf.
They wanted to inform me that my email was forwarded to the ARC's Case Study 29 public hearing team. The email also spoke of Geoffrey Jackson appearing to testify Fri Aug 14/15 and supplied a link to the live broadcast. They also thanked me for my interest in their work.
I am quite impressed as I didn't expect to hear back from Angus let alone Mr. Reed. I replied back last night.
