cult novelist writes about...........cults !
by wobble inthe novelist and essayist haruki murakami wrote quite a bit, based on interviews he did with survivors and cult members, about the aum sect, who released deadly sarin nerve-gas on the tokyo subway in 1995. his interviews and his thoughts appeared in english in the book "underground".. he promised to return to the matter of cults in his fiction, which he has done in his latest work, iq84.. in it appear two cults, one is "aum like", with a very sinister leader, the other is a christian sect whose pamphleteering members refuse life-saving surgery and is called "the society of witnesses", i wonder who inspired the latter one ?.

Would Christianity have survived if......
by wobble in...........the roman empire had not adopted it ?
they were far from being in the majority at the time, although growth had taken place over a large area, but within that area they were still a minority religion, often an underground one.. so hypothetically, would it just have withered and died, have torn itself to shreds with all the schisms and sects ?.
i think that without the power of rome it would have done just that, perhaps the coptic church may have survived until the 21st century and perhaps the eastern churches, but the western ?

I saw a sad sight yesterday.
by wobble ini was strolling up our high street, trying to avoid the sally army chuggers, when coming towards me was an elderly lady, she suddenly approached a young lady and offered her a tract, the girl refused.. the old dear was weirdly dressed in very old-fashioned clothes that still screamed "pioneer",they can't have been exactly fashinable when they were new, she must have been in her seventies, but was weird looking, not helped by bright orange hair and very red lipstick, i checked, and she was holding the tract "you can trust the bible" (oh yea??).
i have not seen anyone doing street work for ages in our town, even she was not that dedicated, she dodged in to a charity shop and had a look at what was on offer, still counting her time i guess.. i thought of engagng her in conversation, but then i thought no, better to leave her in the cult, she will do more harm reinforcing the impression that jw's are a bunch of weirdos by her desultory street work than she would if she woke up and left the dubs.. years ago we used to get a bunch of young people together and we would all go in street work, and to the markets etc.
we used to make it fun, as much as we could.. now all they have as the public face of the jw's is a sad, weird old lady.. i think we shall see this more and more, the glory days are gone for the wt.. good..

Has anyone here ever attended the WT's Annual General Meeting ?
by wobble inmy sister has been invited this year, i would be interested to hear first hand experience of what she may expect, the kind of (boring) stuff that will be on the agenda, and anything else.. why invite someone like her ?
i guess a kindly c.o has identified her as a loyal wt drone who has had no recognition.
she has been in full-time work for the wt for over forty years, most of those as a special pioneer, she never married, totally devoted to the religion.. nice that she is to be acknowledged, of course she will have to pay for her flight (from europe) and other expenses, and god, sorry, i mean the governing body, (the wt god), will not know who she is, or that she is there.. i can imagine that when she returns home ,she will be feted as a celebrity for getting so close to god , oops, done it again, the gb, and people will be under the impression that she is privy to some new "light".. what is the reality of this farce ?.

GREAT BOOK ! May free your JW loved ones.
by wobble ini have just finished reading a great book entitled "believing bullshit" by stephen law, published by prometheus books of n.y. www.prometheusbooks.com.
in it the author outlines how we come to believe total claptrap most often because of the dubious methods used by the promoters of these ideas.. he does not set out to debunk the ideas themselves as the main purpose of the book, though in passing he has to do so with some .like alien abductions, christian science and homeopathy etc.
his main purpose is to expose the methods used to get people to believe,,and how even if the idea being put forward may be good, or a truth, to use such methods is not justified, and leads one open to being sucked in to an intellectual black hole if you are duped by them.. if this book is read by an active, believing jw they will not smell any rats, but by the end of it, if they are honest with themselves they will see the methods used by the wt as totally dishonest and reminiscent of snake-oil salesmen.. it may just free their minds enough.. i cannot praise it too highly, it is a valuable read for anybody, and shows why even college educated, intelligent people can be fooled by bs..

The Great NORM
by wobble ini was moved to go back in the archives and read some of the posts from the great "norm" who used to post here up until about 4 years ago.. norman hovlund comes originally from norway i believe, so he occasionally writes as he speaks english, but his writing is wonderful in his posts.. he also set up a web site: http://home.c2i.net/norman/index.htm which looks as though it hasn't been updated recently, but read his letters to the gb, hilarious, and he maintains they actually got to read them !
lol.
go and look at some of his posts on here, marvellous..
