It's disgusting to think anyone would take advantage of the flood situation to loot homes, but there was a group doing that after the Waldo Canyon fires too. Fortunately they were rounded up. Home defense is my story, and I'm sticking to it! I told my JW mother that I bought a Smith & Wesson m&p 9mm and she got quiet. Next I remembered with regrets the Rossi .38 special I traded in at a gun show for a cheapo .380, so I bought a Ruger LCR .357 which I load with 38 special ammo. Here sits this .380 box of ammo, so we recently bought a S & W .380, "The Bodyguard" for my birthday because we didn't want that good ammo going to waste. Wow! What fun it is to go target shooting at the range! Walmart has some zombie targets that are fun to tack up and practice your accuracy on. My hubby & I discovered a new hobby and he was pleased that I like going. I gave him the 9mm so now I may need to find one for me! At work, quite a few women are getting into handguns for target shooting and personal protection. You can't just wring your hands if someone breaks in your house, or do they think mumbling a prayer and killing them with kindness works?

Should an elder discourage military service even if said elder has a military pension?
by garyneal indiscussion with my wife concerning what i perceive as a hypocrisy that i see amongst elders (and ministerial servants) who happened to serve in the military long enough to draw a pension check.
all this in a former life (read before coming in to the truth) of course.
i think if said elder were to discourage a young one from seeking military service, or worse participate in the disfellowshipping of such a person if he or she choose to serve, smacks of total hypocrisy.

My father was an elder and actually applied to VA for additional benefits in his seventies. He only served one tour in the army in his twenties but had no problem with asking for money. He was an elder when he did this and had done his fair share of lecturing young men to refuse to serve when there was a draft during the Vietnam war. Some of them went to prison for it.
My parents were mad that VA turned them down for assistance because they'd blown through their inheritance and now VA turned them down. How were they supposed to make ends meet?
I thught they should've been ashamed of themselves.

When I was a little girl, there was an annointed lady, (so she claimed) who shared a small house with my father's handicapped aunt. She was mean, had a wicked tongue on her and wasn't well liked. I was afraid of her. I could never believe she had been chosen by God as someone special because she was so nasty.

Cedars, thanks for the clip! It was apalling. It helped me to be certain I could never ever sit through a meeting again. My elderly mother's been urging me to just go for the talk. I'm a Supervisor at my job and not only am I not in subjection to men, I'm the boss of several and have even written a few up over the years. No, I've changed too much to sit through this ridiculous crap. This Lett guy's really wierd and I can't picture allowing him to tell me what to do. I may be a female, but I have a brain! Amazing they actually get today's educated, career women to get baptized.

I personally do not see anything funny about it. Sadly, right now it is wrecking my marriage and my husband and I are separated due to his obsession with porn. He is up late on the computer and up early on the computer. He joined online groups which leads to cybersex invitations, and he bought porn DVD's.
After awhile, it takes more and more shocking images to hold the person's interest. My husband has no interest in real sex. He can log in and be with a different fantasy person or several- every night.
A man at work got caught viewing porn on a company computer. He was warned. He kept doing it and is now about to be fired. I'm so not thinking this is to be taken lightly. It has ruined lots of marriages. It starts out as no big deal but then it takes over.
Guys, when you think it's just boys being boys, please consider the damage being done to families and devastated wives who have lost their husbands to this. To some women, it's nothing to joke around about.
Sorry to rant. It's just so raw right now for me.

Just saw an elderly JW man...

if body language has any validity to it, this man was deeply discouraged and depressed.
i remember that slump too.

3rdgen, it's really nice to read your post. My Father passed away a few months ago, elderly and after lengthy health problems. It was so sad, because I do believe he harbored some doubts but it was too late to do his life over. After having been out for many years, some of "the friends" impressed me with their caring and willingness to help my Mom; others were real oddballs and clueless about appropriate times to visit the hospital or how long to stay. They had no idea the family wanted privacy in the final hours.
I do believe there are so many good folks still in who wonder about the direction the JW's are going in and the questionable leadership. Something seems "off" but they can't put their finger on it. After you get too old, (like my mom), you just hang on to basic biblical principles, and the friends you have made. It's too late to start over once you get in your seventies and eighties. They kind of cross their fingers that they've lived a good life and hope it will be allright.
Glad you are doing OK. I was a born in and know lots of us aren't evil people. We just sensed something didn't smell right at the Kingdom Hall, and try to live good lives. I honor my Mother and respect her fear of change. She is better off at her age being happy and naive than finding out there is anything wrong. Best of luck to you!
