Moral Obligation

do we have a moral obligation to help witnesses see the truth about the wt?.

part of me feels that i should just be happy i am out.

i wasn't happy in the borg.

Perhaps it would sound less judgemental to say it is an ethical obligation. Hayakawa comments "Ethical, by contrast [to moral] is more and more taken to describe just and fair dealings with other people, not by the application of an external standard but by pragmatic consideration of all aspects of a situation in light of past experience."

In that line of thought, our common membership in society entails a certain mutual responsibility to support, and even promote, the ethical standards of that society. To do so need not infringe on legitimate personal freedoms or impose arbitrary moral codes. It's more like a "normalization" process that enables each member to be integrated with their fellow man.

IMO, this is an obligation that all sentient beings owe to each other.

BONEZZ, here's another one--- Ecclesiastes 4:1 "So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter."

Comforter: You really need to change your attitude, as well as your handle. Even a vacuum offers more comfort than you do.

Amp: But they will do all this to you because of My name, for they do not know the One who sent Me. [textual insertions deleted]

AV: But all these things will they do unto you for my names sake, because they know not him that sent me.

as of 8:30 pm this evening the appeal hearing decided to uphold the decision.

i spoke to them for over an hour and tried to reason with them as to the validity of their decision.

frankly, they were not interested.

As far as the Biblical standard: pharmakeia, pharmakeus, and pharmakos are all rendered in the NWT as " spiritistic practice, practicing spiritism." (Gal 5:20; Rev 9:21; 18:23; 21:8; 22:15) Various lexicons define it as "sorcery, magic, enchantment." The use of drugs to achieve and enhance a supernatural experience is being talked about here, similar to the Oracle of Delphi. The Bible is absolutely not here talking about the recreational use of drugs, and the NWT rendering shows that WTS knows this. The WTS grasped onto this word in a faulty and self-serving attempt to intrude yet again into the private business of JWs.

Comparison to other drugs: Nicotine is an alkaloidal compound in the same chemical family as caffeine. Both are poisons, both have deleterious physiological effects, and both can be addictive. Toxicity is lower for caffeine (60 drops of pure nicotine on the toungue will cause death by cardiac arrest in 10 seconds, it only takes 1 drop of nicotine to do the same). However, a "typical" cigarette delivers approx 4-6 mg of nicotine, whereas a cup of regular coffee contains 150-350 mg of caffeine. Essentially, one cup of coffee is equivalent to one cigarette in terms of physiological stress.

Health considerations: There is an increasingly large body of evidence indicating that genetics is the predominate mortality factor. A large number of people who have lived the "healthiest" lifestyles die from the same diseases as those who drink, smoke, and eat red meat.

Yes, I do smoke, but at a statistically insignificant level. I never smoke in the house, car, or restaurant. I always throw my butts in the trash. My last x-rays were clean and clear. I have quit, at times, for up to several years at a stretch.

Dang, this has got me all stressed. I'm gonna have a smoke.

Searcher: Double standard, indeed. That's one of the inconsistencies of WTS thinking that really gets to me. If they want to "go it on their own," then they should eschew any pretense of substantiating their theology by referencing "worldy" authorities. Just be up front and say "We think these other guys are idiots, here's the truth according to us." Or, if they want to look all scholarly by quoting nonJW sources, then they should abide by the preponderance of evidence that those other sources provide.

The way the WTS employs the "pick and choose" approach is undisciplined and unprofessional.

Of course, you realize that the KJV isn't copyrighted because it is the only version of the Bible that was directly inspired by God? And even the copyright office has to show some respect when it comes to God. hehe

edited for PS: Sang, I just checked my library, and I have a copy of the Concordant Literal New Testament (Concordant Publishing Concern, 1983). It does not have a copyright. Perhaps there are other limited circulation non-copyrighted translations and versions?
