February - the US LP Hey Jude is released, which features previously released singles not available on LP. The record hits #2.
March 6 - the UK single "Let It Be" is released, (March 11 in the US) reaching US #1 and UK #2. It sets a record for the US charts for the highest first time entry on the singles chart, debuting at #6.
April 10 - in an official press release accompanying his debut solo album McCartney, Paul makes several statements that reaffirm the breakup of the Beatles. However, Paul states that he is "not done with the Beatles" and does not directly state that the band has broken up.
May 8 - the Let It Be LP is released, reaching US and UK #1.
May 20 - The film "Let It Be" is premiered in London. None of the Beatles attend the showing.
August - Paul writes to John suggesting the breakup of the Beatles legal partnership.
August 4 - Apple press offices are closed down.
December 31 - Paul files a law suit against Beatles & Co to dissolve the partnership and severe ties with Alan Klein. The band officially breaks up.
